Box Score The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team closed out a successful run at the University Athletic Association Tournament on Saturday with a victory over No. 21-ranked Washington University. The Eagles topped the Bears by a 7-2 margin and in the process captured the league's outright championship. On Saturday, Emory had clinched a tie for the crown. With the win over WU, Emory stands 23-3 overall and finished off the UAA portion of the schedule with a 6-2 mark.
Emory spread out its offensive attack with four players hitting safely twice as it rang up a total of 11 hits. Sophomore Megan Light homered for the team-leading seventh time this season and drove in a pair of runs to highlight the effort while freshman Micah Scharff and sophomore Sophia Tarte each scored twice while registering a pair of hits.
The Eagles never trailed in the contest, scoring twice in the bottom of the first with Light and senior left fielder Jessica Thomas coming through with run-producing singles. After the Bears cut Emory's lead in half with a run in the top of the third, the Eagles added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extended their advantage to 4-1. Emory put the game out of reach when it crossed the plate three times in the sixth. Tarte got things rolling with a double that scored Scharff who led off the frame with a single before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. After back-to-back walks to Light and Thomas loaded the bases, senior Jessica Boni stroked a single to left field that scored Tarte. The Eagles scored their final run after a bases-loaded walk to sophomore Lauren Gorodetsky scored Light.
Sophomore pitcher Amanda Kardys went the distance in the circle and raised her record to 5-2, allowing 11 hits and striking out six.
This year's performance at the UAAs represented the third straight year and sixth time that the Eagles had brought home the conference title.
Emory returns to action next Sunday (Mar. 25) when it hosts LaGrange College in a doubleheaders starting at noon.
