Eagles Fall to Washington 10-1 at UAA Championships

Box Score

The Emory University baseball team dropped its first game of the 2012 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Wednesday, falling 10-1 to Washington University (Mo.).

With the loss, the Eagles, now 4-1 in UAA games, fall into second-place behind Washington, which improved to 4-0 in the conference with the win.

The Bears scored two early runs off Emory starter Connor McGuiness in the first inning, and added five more in the fourth inning, never looking back.  Bears' starter Taylor Berman pitched the complete game, allowing just one run on five hits and two walks, striking out nine batters with a 123 pitch effort.

Emory scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, when, trailing 9-0, freshman Brett Lake singled, stole second base, and was driven in by Jared Welch's RBI double to left centerfield.  The stolen base was the ninth of the tournament for Lake, tying the tournament record set Michael Zehring of Johns Hopkins University in 1989.

McGuiness took the loss for Emory, falling to 1-2 on the season.  Freshman Graham Bloomsmith was a bright spot for the Eagles out of the bullpen, holding the Bears to one run on two hits over the final four innings.

The loss dropped Emory to 11-7 on the year, while Washington earned its 11th-straight victory, improving to 11-3 for the season.

Emory will continue play at the UAA Championships on Thursday at 11:00 AM, taking on the University of Rochester at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, FL.
