Eagles Drop 7-5 Game to Huntingdon at Chappell Park

Box Score

The Emory University baseball team dropped its third-straight game on Wednesday, falling 7-5 to Huntingdon College at Chappell Park.

With the loss, the Eagles dropped back to .500 on the season with a 5-5 overall record.  Huntingdon improved to 10-3 on the campaign with the victory.

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, loading the bases with nobody out against Huntingdon starter John Rice, who issued a one-out walk to Mark Lindemann to score the first run of the game.  The next batter, freshman Brett Lake, hit a ground ball to second base, but was able to beat out the double play to allow sophomore Ryan Toscano to score from third and keep the inning going.  Senior Jay Page scored from third on a throwing error by the Hawks' catcher in the next at bat, on a stolen base from Lake, capping off the three-run frame.

Huntingdon wasted little time getting back into the game, sending 11 batters to the plate in the top of the third and scoring five runs, all with two outs, off Emory starter Paul Schwendel.  Highlighting the inning for the Hawks were two-RBI doubles from catcher Joseph Odom and third baseman Jordan Freeman, and an RBI single for Evan Agnew.

Emory pulled the game back to within a run in the bottom of the fourth, after Toscano led the frame off with a double, and Lindemann singled him in with two outs.  However, the Hawks added on a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on a two-RBI single from Tyler Blackwell to make it a 7-4 game.

Emory inched closer with a run on an RBI single from Lake in the seventh.  Down two with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, freshman Stephen Sotiriou singled and Lake walked to put the tying runs on base and bring the go ahead run to the plate in sophomore Brandon Hannon.  However, Hannon struck out swinging to end the game.

Schwendel took the loss on the day, falling to 1-1 on the season.  Rice earned the victory for the Hawks to raise his record to 1-2, while Tyler Spivey picked up fourth save of the campaign with a scoreless ninth inning.

For the Eagles offensively, Lindemann paced the squad with a pair of RBIs, the second baseman's first two of the season, while went two-for-four with two runs scored and a double.

Emory sophomore Matt McMahon and senior Connor McGuiness combined to pitch three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, giving up just two hits and striking out a batter.

The Eagles will look to put an end to their three-game losing streak on Friday, as the Eagles will host Denison University at 2:00 PM at Chappell Park.
