Box Score The Emory University baseball team dropped just its second game of the season on Wednesday, falling to Maryville College 13-1 at Chappell Park.
The loss dropped the Eagles to 4-2 on the campaign, while Maryville improved to 5-2 with the victory.
The Eagles fell into an immediate hole in the game, as the Scots scored two runs in the top of the first on an infield single and four walks. Sophomore Robert Gross entered the game in relief of sophomore starter Jason Edwards with one out and the bases loaded in the first inning, and was able to limit the damage to just the two runs.
Emory had a chance in the first inning to get a run back, after freshman Brett Lake led off with a hit by pitch and stole second base. Sophomore Brandon Hannon followed with a base hit to centerfield, but Lake was thrown out trying to score on a close play at home.
Maryville added a run in the top of the second off Gross, but the Eagles continued to keep it close early, as junior Daniel Iturrey drove in a run with a bases loaded sacrifice fly in the third.
The score remained 3-1 until the top of the fifth inning. With a run in already in the frame off Gross, Maryville right fielder Cory Kopec hit a three-run home run with two outs off Emory reliever Ryan Orlovsky, giving the Scots a 7-1 lead.
Things continued to go downhill for the Eagles' bullpen after that, as the squad allowed three more runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth.
Sophomore Ryan Toscano continued his recent tear at the plate with two more hits, including a double, to raise his batting average to .364. Hannon and senior Kevin O'Connor each picked up a pair of his for the Eagles during the day as well.
Edwards took the loss in his season debut for Emory, falling to 0-1 on the season. Garrett McDaniel improved to 1-0 with the win for the Scots.
The Eagles will look to recover from the loss on Friday, opening the Rawlings Southern Classic at Chappell Park against Rhodes College at 2:00 PM.
