Box Score After sustaining its first loss of the season the previous afternoon, the Emory men's basketball team bounced back in strong fashion on Sunday, defeating Maryville College in the squad's final action at the Oglethorpe Thanksgiving Tournament. The Eagles boosted their record to 4-1 following a decisive 85-55 victory over the Scots who fell to 2-2.
Junior McPherson Moore, making his first start of the campaign, spearheaded the Emory offensive attack with a season-high tying 18 points, hitting seven-of-15 from the field and all four of his attempts from the foul line. Moore also grabbed a season-high tying eight rebounds and tied for the club's lead with three steals. Senior Alex Greven was next up on the Emory scoring chart with 16 points while senior Michael Friedberg and freshman Will Trawick rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Friedberg added a team-high nine rebounds and posted a pair of blocked shots while Trawick's offensive effort represented a season best.
Both teams got out of the blocks slowly to start the game, with Emory hitting just three of its first 14 field goal attempts while Maryville misfired on its first seven tries from the floor as well as turning the ball over on eight occasions as Emory claimed an 8-1 lead nine minutes into the contest. An 8-0 Emory run extended a 16-7 lead into a 24-7 advantage with 4:14 left in the stanza before the Eagles rattled off a 15-5 barrage over the final 3:14 of the half, keyed by a pair of treys by Greven and six points by Moore to assume a commanding 41-17 bulge at the half. The Scots converted just 20.8 percent from the floor (5-of-24) in the half and turned the ball over 14 times, leading to 16 Emory points. Greven finished the opening 20 minutes with 13 points while Moore had 10.
Emory maintained its dominance in the second half with its lead never dipping below 20 points while leading by as many as 33 points on two occasions. The Eagles spread out their 44-point half with Moore and Trawick each picking up eight points while sophomore Josh Schattie accounted for seven of his nine points over the final 20 minutes.
The Eagles finished the contest shooting 44.3 percent (31-of-70) from the floor compared to Maryville's 27.6 percent (16-of-58) with that mark that lowest opponent total against a Zimmerman-coached Emory team. Emory pounded the glass to the tune of a 54-37 advantage including a season-high tying 18 on the offensive end, five of which came from Moore.
Emory returns to action on Wednesday (Nov. 28) when it hosts No. 12-ranked Birmingham Southern in a 7:00 p.m. start.
