Emory Volleyball Win Streak At 16 Matches -- Schonefeld Becomes School's All-Time Leader In Assists

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

On an afternoon that saw senior Natalie Schonefeld become Emory's all-time leader in assists, the No. 4-ranked Eagles' volleyball team ran their win streak to 16 matches after posting a pair of Saturday wins on the final day of the Emory Homecoming Tournament.  Emory opened play with a 3-1 win over Martin-Methodist (24-26, 25-22, 25-16, 25-18) before claiming a 3-0 decision against Berry (25-20, 25-10, 25-17).  Emory now stands 17-1 on the year.

Schonefeld, who entered the day with 4,860 assists, needed 19 to surpass Amy Shapiro's previous standard of 4,878, and she accomplished that in the second set in the Berry match.  She totaled 34 assists in the sweep over the Vikings and will take a total of 4,894 into next weekend's UAA Round Robin I in St. Louis.   Schonefeld's deft setting helped the Eagles hit a season high .378 (47-10—98), the squad's sixth outing of .300 or higher this year.  Senior Amelia McCall and junior Breanah Bourque combined for 30 of the Eagles' 47 terminations with each picking up 15 kills.  Freshman Cami Silverman keyed a solid defensive effort that limited the opposition to just a .139 hitting percentage by totaling a team-high 12 digs.

Emory head coach Jenny McDowell played a host of her younger players against the RedHawks of Martin-Methodist.  Freshman Kate Bowman tied for match honors with 12 kills while finishing with a .318 hitting percentage (12-5—22).  Senior Kelsey Freeman made the most of her opportunities,  rounding out the team's double-figure terminators with a career-best 11 kills.   Freshman Dana Holt doled out 41 assists and contributed seven digs.  Emory outhit Martin-Methodist, .263 to .181 and held a 45-35 edge in digs.

Emory has won its last 17 home matches and manufactured a 54-3 won-lost slate in games played at the Woodruff PE Center since 2008.

Schonefeld was named MVP of the Homecoming Tournament while Amelia McCall, Jessica McAlvany and Breanah Bourque were other Emory representatives.
