Box Score 2 The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team treated a Senior Day crowd
to three wins Saturday afternoon while Eagles' head coach
Penny Siqueiros also enjoyed a memorable afternoon by notching her
400th career win. Emory opened the trifecta with a
doubleheader sweep over Rhodes College by 5-2 and 5-4 scores, and
then registered a 13-0, five-inning decision over Spelman
College. With the three victories, Emory now stands 32-2-1 on
the year.
In the first game of the day, junior pitcher Jaclyn Jacobi upped
her season slate to 2-0 after turning in a stellar effort in relief
of starter Lena Brottman, blanking the Lynx over 6 2/3 innings,
allowing just four hits and striking out two. Freshman Megan
Light keyed the squad's 11-hit attack with a pair of safeties
and three RBIs while sophomore Dana Goodenough, senior Brittany
Boeshore and junior Jessica Boni all contributed two hits.
After seeing Rhodes score twice in its half of the first, Emory
battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning with Light
singling in the first run and then later scoring the second after a
ground out by Jessica Thomas. Goodenough drove in what
proved to be the winning tally in the second inning with a two-out
single that scored senior Nikki Perez. In the bottom of the
fourth, Emory added a pair of insurance runs when a two-run double
by Light enabled Goodenough and Boeshore to cross the plate.
Meanwhile, Jacobi handcuffed the Lynx bats, not allowing a hit over
the final four innings while seeing just two batters reach
base. The win was represented Siqueiros's
400th career win at Emory and the ninth time during her
career that she has guided the program to 30 or more victories.
The Eagles had to put their rally caps on again in the second
contest against Rhodes as the Lynx used a bases-loaded clearing
double by Olivia Ryan to take a 3-0 lead after the first
inning. After Rhodes added a run in the fourth to extend its
lead to 4-0, the Eagles roared back with a five-run barrage
in the bottom of the frame that saw them collect five hits while
sending nine batters to the plate. Boni and freshman
Catherine Norman accounted for the first two RBIs with a single and
sacrifice fly, respectively, to narrowed the gap to 4-2.
After a Rhodes error allowed another Emory runner to sprint home, a
double by Boeshore scored Goodenough with the tying run and Sophia
Tarte with the eventual winning score. As was the case
in the first game, Emory was the beneficiary of outstanding relief
pitching, this time by sophomore Jamie Melson who came on in the
first inning to quell the Rhodes uprising. Melson earned her
first win of 2011 after hurling 6 2/3 innings and surrendering just
one run and three hits. She fanned five and did not walk a
batter.
The Eagles rattled off all 13 of their runs against the Jaguars of
Spelman in the first inning. Junior Jen Haag and senior Zara
Louy each delivered two-run singles while freshman Catherine
Norman, who ended the game 3-for-3 at the plate, knocked in a run
with a three-base hit. Freshman Amanda Kardys and Light
combined to no-hit Spelman over five innings with Kardys
registering her second win of the year in as many decisions.
She went three innings and struck out four while Light tossed the
final two frames, fanning three.
Today's contests marked the final regular-season appearances
at Cooper Field for seniors Nikki Perez, Brittnay Boeshore and Zara
Louy. The trio were recognized for their contributions to the
program following the Spelman game.
Emory returns to action next Saturday (Apr. 16) when it plays a
doubleheader at Berry College.
