Baseball's Comeback Bid Falls Short in 8-6 Loss to Maryville

Box Score

The Emory University baseball team came back from a 6-2 deficit after four innings, tying Maryville College in the seventh inning, but the Eagles were unable to pull out the victory, falling 8-6 to the Scots in Maryville, TN.

Senior Patrick Riebsame led the Eagles at the plate with a four-for-five performance, including two RBIs, a double and a run scored.  Freshman Brandon Hannon reached base all five plate appearances, going two-for-two with two singles, two walks, and his 11th stolen base of the season.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Eagles struck back with a run in the second on a double to straight-away centerfield from Daniel Iturrey, scoring Kevin O'Connor.

Maryville scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, gaining a 3-1 lead over Emory, but the Eagles added another run in the third on three walks and a hit by pitch, but would leave the bases loaded in the inning.  The Scots scored three more off Emory starter Paul Schwendel (who was working on short rest) in the bottom of the fourth, taking their largest lead of the game at 6-2.

The Eagles would begin their comeback in the sixth inning, after Riebsame doubled with one out in the inning, and Andrew DeYoung followed with an RBI base hit.  Down 6-3 heading into the seventh, the Eagles would tie the game up on a two-RBI double from Riebsame and a bases-loaded walk to Gabe Shivers.

In the eighth, the Eagles would get the tying run into scoring position, after Hannon walked to start the inning, and stole second with one out, but would be unable to score the run.  Maryville would be more successful in their half of the eighth, scoring a pair of runs off sophomore Mike Bitanga to take an 8-6 lead heading into the ninth.  Riebsame picked up his fourth hit of the game in the team's final at bat, but it would be the only hit in the frame for Emory, ending the game.

The Eagles dropped to 21-11 on the season with the loss, while Maryville improved to 21-7 with the victory.  The Eagles will return to action tomorrow, hosting Atlanta Christian College at 3:00 PM at Chappell Park.
