Senior (2012):
Schwendel's senior season proved to be a breakout campaign forthe right-handed pitcher, who earned ABCA/ Rawlings All-SouthRegion Third Team recognition for his effort. He finished theyear with a career-best 103 strikeouts, the fifth-best singleseason total in school history and the 10th-most in Division III in2012, and his 10.0 strikeouts per game ranked as the 32nd-bestDivision III mark. Schwendel matched his career-high for winsin a season with a 6-4 record, and his 3.01 ERA in 2012 was hislowest career mark by two runs. Despite pitching acareer-high 92.2 innings, his 29 walks issued were thesecond-lowest mark of his career, and he was able to limit opposinghitters to a .252 batting average. He made 14 appearancesduring the season, including 12 starts, and his three completegames were the most by an Eagle since Jason Glushon in 2007. Right-handed batters hit just .223 (60-for-223) againstSchwendel during the season. In his last seven appearances ofthe season, he pitched at least seven innings and struck out atleast seven batters each time, including at least 10 strikeouts ineach of his last four starts. He allowed just one unearnedrun through eight and a third innings against nationally-rankedBirmingham-Southern College on March 27th, giving up just four hitsand striking out 11 batters. He Schwendel also struck out acareer-high 13 batters (the third-most in a single game in schoolhistory) through eight innings during a 11-8 win over MethodistUniversity on April 21st. On April 21st against CovenantCollege, he did not allow an earned run in a complete-game win,striking out 11 without walking a batter. During theUniversity Athletic Association (UAA) Tournament, Schwendel earnedvictories in a pair of games against Case Western ReserveUniversity, combining to strike out 19 batters in 13 innings ofwork, while surrendering five runs on 11 hits. Pitching theopening game of the NCAA Tournament for the Eagles, Schwendel tooka 2-0 loss, despite allowing just one earned run on five hits and awalk, while striking out 11 batters. He was named the UAAAthlete of the Week on May 21st, following his performance duringthe NCAA Tournament. Schwendel also earned one save duringthe season, getting the final out of a 9-7 Emory victory overDenison University on March 4th. He finished his Emory careerwith the sixth-most career starts in school history (38), seventhin strikeouts (231), ninth in innings pitched (245.1) and wins(19), 10th in strikeouts per game (8.47) and 12th in appearances(52). He was 19-8 with a 4.66 ERA overall for his four-yearcareer. After the conclusion of the season, Schwendel wasselected in the 40th round by the Texas Rangers, as the 1,236thoverall pick in the 2012 Major League Baseball First Year PlayerDraft.
Junior (2011):
Schwendel earned his first postseason honor in 2011, as thejunior was named to the all-University Athletic Association(UAA) Second Team. He was 5-1 with a 5.88 ERA during thecampaign, leading the team with 63 strikeouts, the 110th-best markamong Division III pitchers in 2011. Schwendel was alsoranked 148th among D-III picthers with 8.42 strikeouts per nineinnings. He started 12 games and appeared in 13 overallduring the year, throwing 67.1 innings and holding opponents to a.279 batting average. Schwendel struck out a season-high 10batters (the most by an Emory pitcher since 2007) duringa 15-3 win over Huntingdon College on March 19th, allowing threeruns on eight hits in six innings. Left-handed batters hitjust .213 (13-for-61) against Schwendel during the season.
Sophomore (2010):
Schwendel finished his 2010 campaign with a 2-3 record and onesave, making seven starts and five appearances out of thebullpen. He notched a 5.93 earned run average, allowing 29earned runs and striking out 36 batters in 44 innings. Schwendel held opponents to a .288 batting average, the lowestamong all Emory pitchers with at least 24 innings pitched, whileholding right-handed batters to a .271 batting average(39-for-144). With the bases empty, opponents hit just .260(19-for-73) off Schwendel. On March 10th against theUniversity of Rochester, Schwendel struck out acareer-high eight batters in five and a third innings, capping offback-to-back starts where he struck out 15 in ten and a thirdinnings.
Freshman (2008):
Schwendel recorded a perfect 6-0 record with a 5.01 earned runaverage during his freshman season for the Eagles. He madeseven starts and appeared in six games out of the bullpen, strikingout 29 batters in 41.1 innings pitched.
