The Emory men's tennis team has advanced to the title match of
the University Athletic Association Championships after defeating
Carnegie Mellon in the semifinals on Saturday.
The Eagles, the No. 1 seed at the Championships and No.
2-ranked squad nationally, boosted their overall record to 19-3
following a 7-1 decision over the No. 17-ranked Tartans who slipped
to 14-9. Serving as the host for this year's
competition is Brandeis University.
Emory held a 2-1 lead after doubles with the No. 3 duo of senior
Colin Egan and junior Dillon Pottish coming away with the first
point following an 8-2 verdict over Forrest Grinstead and Jooho Yu
that raised their record this spring to 17-2. After CMU
knotted the match with a victory at the No. 2 spot, juniors Chris
Goodwin and Will Humphreys put the Eagles ahead to stay with a
hard-fought 9-7 outcome over Alex Nemerov and Bobby MacTaggart at
No. 1, their 18th win in 22 decisions during the spring
portion of the schedule.
Pottish helped Emory extend its lead when he bettered Nemerov, 6-0,
6-2, at No. 1 singles. Pottish has compiled a glittering
singles mark of 29-2 during the 2010-11 campaign with his win total
tying the second-highest total in school annals. Senior Colin
Egan put the Eagles one point away from clinching the match as he
defeated MacTaggart, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3. Freshman Simon
Lavoie-Perusse, playing at the No. 5 slot, iced the outcome with a
decisive 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Yu, his eighth straight win and
17th in 21 outings this spring. Picking up the
other two victories were freshman Nick Szczurek and Goodwin and No.
4 and No. 2, respectively.
Emory will meet third-seeded and No. 5-ranked Washington University
(14-8) for the championship on Sunday. The two are familiar
foes when it comes to playing for the league crown with
tomorrow's showdown the sixth straight year the schools have
met in the finals. Action is slated to get underway at 10:00
a.m.
