The Emory University baseball team scored 18 runs on 14 hits and
12 walks, and turned a triple play in the eighth inning, en route
to an 18-6 win over the University of the South (Sewanee) Tigers at
Chappell Park on Wednesday.
Andrew Cohn finished the day two-for-four with
three runs scored, two RBIs a triple and two walks, and is now five
hits shy of becoming the 10th player in school history
to reach 200 career hits.
Cohn also started the rare triple play in the eighth inning.
With runners on first and second and nobody out and
Alexander Castaneda on the mound, Chris Mauro
grounded a ball down the third base line. Cohn fielded the
grounder, stepping on third base, before throwing to Mark
Lindemann at second base, who relayed to Evan
Plys at first to complete the historic triple play for
Emory.
Sophomore Andrew DeYoung added a two-for-four
performance with four RBIs, including his first career home
run. Jared Welch, Jonathan
Reilly, Mark Lindemann, Evan
Plys and Gabe Shivers each had two RBI
days for Emory as well.
Freshman Ryan Toscano earned the victory with
three and a third innings of work, allowing five hits and striking
out two. Keith Gordon, Connor
McGuiness, Alexander Castaneda and
Mike Bitanga each had scoreless relief efforts for
the Eagles.
Emory improved to 25-12 with the win, while the University of the
South dropped to 10-18 with the loss. The Eagles will return
to action on Friday, April 15th at Berry College.
