Emory senior Brittany Boeshore hit a walk-off homer in the
seventh inning of the first game and drove in what proved to be the
deciding run in the nightcap in helping the No. 1-ranked Eagles to
a doubleheader sweep over Piedmont College Wednesday
afternoon. Emory raised its overall record to 26-0 following
4-3 and 5-0 victories over the Lions who slipped to 12-6 on the
year.
Freshman Megan Light helped the Eagles to a 2-0 start in the
opening inning of the first contest when she drilled a two-run
homer to left field, her eighth round tripper of the season.
Emory added another run in the bottom of the fifth when a two-out
single by junior Jessica Boni scored sophomore Dana
Goodenough. The Lions made the most of a pair of Emory
miscues in the field and knotted the game in the top of the sixth
with run-producing singles by B.J. Cofer and Lauren Head the key
blows. Boeshore then provided the heroics for the home team
in the bottom of the seventh when she led off with her third homer
of the season. Junior pitcher Bridget Holloway picked up the
win in relief of starter Lena Brottman, tossing 1 2/3 hitless
innings.
Freshman Lauren Gorodetsky picked up two of the club's six
hits and scored twice in the finale and junior left fielder Jessica
Thomas delivered a two-run double in a three-run third inning to
key the win. Boeshore drove in the team's first run on
a fielder's choice in the third inning which was followed by
Thomas' two-bagger. The Eagles put a little more
distance between themselves and the visitors in the next frame when
a sacrifice fly by Goodenough followed by a bases-loaded walk to
Boni drove in the game's final runs of the game.
Holloway drew the start in the circle and boosted her season record
to 14-0, hurling a complete-game three hitter. In the process, she
lowered her ERA to 1.03 over 78 2/3 innings of work.
Emory returns to action on Thursday (Mar. 24) when it hosts No.
8-ranked DePauw in a twinbill starting at 2:30 p.m.
