Box Score 2 The Emory softball team closed out a successful weekend at the
Birmingham Southern Invitational on Sunday with wins over
Greensboro College and Birmingham Southern. The Eagles opened
the day with a 4-2 victory over Greensboro before registering a 1-0
decision in the finale against BSC. With the two triumphs,
Emory stands 10-0 on the year.
Junior Bridget Holloway got the win on the mound against the
Panthers of BSC, tossing a complete-game, four-hit shutout in
boosting her season record to 5-0. Junior left fielder
Jessica Thomas accounted for the game's lone run when she
homered with two out in the fourth inning, her third of the
year. Thomas picked up two of the squad's four hits
with Jessica Boni and Claire Bailey accounting for the other
safeties.
In the opening game of the day, Boni collected two hits and knocked
in three runs, including a two-run homer in the fourth frame that
gave Emory a 4-0 lead. Bailey and sophomore Dana Goodenough
also chipped in two hits. The Eagles scored a single run in
the first inning when a groundout by freshman Megan Light scored
Bailey who opened the contest with a single. Emory increased
its lead to 2-0 in the second when a one-out double by Boni enabled
Goodenough, who doubled earlier, to score. The Pride battled back,
scoring once in the fourth and fifth innings, but Eagle freshman
pitcher Lena Brottman was up to the task in squelching any further
scoring in chalking up her fifth victory in as many decisions,
allowing eight hits and fanning four.
Emory returns to action on March 6 with contests against
Elizabethtown and Thiel in Orlando.
