Box Score 2 The Emory softball team ran its record to 8-0 on Saturday after
capturing a pair of first-day wins at the Birmingham Southern
Invitational. The Eagles opened the day with a 3-2 victory over
Greensboro College before posting a 6-4 triumph over host
Birmingham Southern. It represents just the second time in
the 13-year history of the program that the Eagles have won their
opening eight games of the season.
In the contest against the Pride of Greensboro, freshman pitcher
Lena Brottman went the distance in boosting The Emory softball team
ran its season record to 8-0 following two wins on Saturday at her
season record to 4-0, allowing a pair of unearned runs on three
hits. She fanned five and issued just one walk. Emory
scored twice in its half of the first with sophomore Ellyn
Kocoloski driving in the first on a sacrifice fly before freshman
designated player Megan Light socked her second homer of the
year. Greensboro tied the game up in the top of the second
with a pair runs before Emory broke the deadlock in the fourth when
a ground ball out by catcher Jessica Boni scored Jessica Thomas
with what proved to be the winning run. Thomas picked up two
of Emory's six hits in the game.
The Panthers of BSC scored a pair of unearned runs in their half of
the first before Emory cut the deficit in half with a run in the
third. The Eagles broke the game open in their half of the
fifth with four runs with Jessica Thomas supplying the key blow
with a two-out, three-run homer. After BSC battled back to
5-4 after scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles
added an insurance run in the seventh when Kocoloski homered on a
3-2 pitch, her first of the year. Junior Bridget Holloway
picked up the victory on the mound, going all seven innings and
giving up six hits.
Emory continues play in the BSC Invitational on Sunday when it
takes on Greensboro at 10:00 a.m. (CST) and Birmingham Southern at
2:00 p.m.
