Box Score Freshman Jake Davis recorded his third double-double of the year
with a season-high 22-points, 12-rebounds performance Friday
evening in helping the Emory men's basketball team to a win
at Case Western Reserve. The Eagles notched their sixth
straight win and raised their overall record to 19-4, 10-2 in the
University Athletic Association, following an 83-64 decision over
the Spartans who fell to 8-15 overall, 4-8 in the UAA.
Davis sank a season-high10-of-17 from the floor en route to his
17th double-figure scoring game of the campaign and
third of 20 or more points. Davis was one four double-digit
scorers for the Eagles with junior Austin Claunch (15 pts.),
sophomore Alex Greven (13 pts.) and junior Alex Gulotta (11 pts.)
all finishing in double figures as Emory tied the program's
second-highest UAA win total. Claunch also doled out eight
assists and chipped in three steals
The Eagles ended the game shooting 45.8 percent (27-of-59) and
knocked down eight three-point field goals. CWRU hit on just
31.7 percent (20-of-63) of its field goal opportunities including
25.0 percent (5-of-20) from beyond the arc. Emory held a
48-41 edge in the rebounding department.
Emory led by as many as 19 points in the first half and took an
11-point edge, 41-30, into the locker room at halftime. The
Spartans used a three-point play by Austin Fowler, who scored a
game-high 25 points, to draw to within eight points in the early
stages of the second half, but that was as close as they would get
as the Eagles answered with 15-5 surge, with five different players
scoring in that stretch, to regain control of the game, 56-38, with
14:35 left on the clock. CWRU would get to within 10 points
on three occasions the remainder of the game, the last time with
6:17 remaining, but Emory answered each challenge in picking up the
victory.
Case Western hit two of its first three shots of the game in
taking a 4-0 lead less than a minute into the contest.
However, Emory quickly seized control of the game with a 28-5 spree
which put it ahead by a 28-9 margin with 7:57 left in the
stanza. During that span, Emory knocked down five of its
seven first-half three-point field goals while the Spartans
connected on just one-of-16 from the floor. A triple by
Alex Gulotta, his second of the half, with 3:36 left gave Emory a
36-18 edge but the Spartans battled back to with 11 points at the
intermission on the strength of a 12-5 run. Emory hit 45.5 percent
(15-of-33) from the floor, including 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from
beyond the arc, during the opening 20 minutes while CWRU finished
the opening stanza converting 10-of-33 from the floor. Davis
paced the Emory scoring attack, coming off the bench to register 13
points while grabbing eight rebounds.
Emory will be shooting for the program's second-ever 20-win
season and first since the 1989-90 campaign when it plays at
Carnegie Mellon on Sunday (Feb. 20) starting at noon.
