Box Score Senior Julien Williams and junior Austin Claunch each scored 18
points and the Emory men's basketball team knocked down a
dozen three-point field goals Friday evening as it earned a win
over Washington University. The Eagles recorded their fourth
straight triumph and raised their overall record to 17-4, 8-2 in
the University Athletic Association following a decisive 92-67
victory over the Bears who slipped to 11-10, 5-5 in the
league. Emory's victory total is the second highest in
school history.
Williams sank seven-of-eight from the floor and converted all three
of his three-point field goal attempts in tying his season high in
points. Claunch registered eight field goals and tied the
school record in the second straight game and third time this
season with 12 assists. In the process, he established a
school mark for most assists in a season with 157, bettering his
previous standard of 151 that he set during the 2009-10
campaign. The 5-foot-9 Claunch also grabbed a team-high six
rebounds, the second straight game he topped the team in that
department, and registered three steals. Rounding out the
team's double-digit scorers were junior Alex Gulotta, who
upped his three-point field goal streak to 33 games, with 15
points, and sophomore Alex Greven with 12 points.
Emory shot 50.7 percent from the floor (34-of-67), the third
straight game that it had reached or surpassed that mark, including
44.4 percent (12-of-27) from beyond the arc. Emory has
registered 10 or more triples in nine games this year and is
shooting 47.2 percent (34-of-72) from distance in the last three
games. The Eagles were successful on 12-of-13 from the
charity stripe and finished with a 36-31 edge in
rebounding.
Behind Claunch's 13 points and sophomore Michael
Friedberg's eight points, Emory shot 50 percent (19-of-38)
during the opening half, and used six three pointers in bolting to
a 48-30 halftime lead, its second-largest halftime of the year and
biggest in UAA action. Emory led by an 18-14 count with 14:19
left in the stanza before going a 16-2 blitz, capped by a triple by
Claunch, in a little less than four minutes to take a commanding
34-16 advantage. Emory hit six-of-10 shots in that stretch and
knocked down four treys with Gulotta, Greven, junior Justin Resnick
and Claunch accounting for those.
Williams helped keep the Eagles ahead of the visitors from Saint
Louis with back-to-back three pointers early in the second half
which aided in a 20-point cushion with 15:43 left. WU then
scored six straight points to cut the deficit to 14 points, 60-46,
with 14:12 remaining, however, that was as close as the Bears would
get as Emory regrouped to post a 21-point edge with 7:56 on the
clock following three free throws by Gulotta. The Eagles
eventually would lead by as many as 27 in the waning seconds of the
game.
Emory, now 11-1 at home this season and winners in its last seven
affairs at the Woodruff PE Center, returns to action on Sunday when
it plays host to Chicago in a noon tip.
