Emory freshman Jake Davis scored a team-high 14 points and the
Eagles had seven players score in double figures in a 95-71 win
over Huntingdon College on Sunday. Emory snapped a two-game
losing streak with the victory and upped its overall record to 8-2
while the Hawks slipped to 4-8.
Emory ended the game hitting 52.4 percent (33-of-63) of its field
goal attempts while holding Huntingdon to 36.5 percent
(23-of-63). Though the Eagles were outrebounded by a 38-35
margin, they totaled 29 points off of 21 Huntingdon
turnovers. Emory was sharp from three-point range, knocking
down a season-high 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from beyond the arc with
eight players picking up at least one triple. The
Eagles' three-point percentage effort not only was a season
high, but tied the fourth-highest single-game mark in school
history.
Sophomore Alex Greven picked up 12 points and junior Austin Claunch
nine points in helping Emory to a 46-34 advantage at halftime.
Huntingdon trailed by just four points, 34-30, following a three
pointer by Jason Varney with 2:55 left in the stanza but the Eagles
closed out the half with a 12-4 spurt, with Greven picking up six
points in that stretch, en route to building the dozen-point
cushion.
After Huntingdon cut the deficit to 11 points early in the second
half, Emory exploded for a 20-4 blitz that gave it a 68-41 lead
with 14:55 left in the game. Seven different Eagles scored in
that decisive stretch including Davis who picked up five
points. Juniors Alex Gulotta and Justin Resnick, along with
sophomore Nash Oh, played a key roles as well with the trio coming
through with three-point field goals. Emory would eventually
extend its lead to 33 points with 2:50 left.
In addition to his team-high 14 points, Davis tied his season high
with a game-high nine rebounds, the third time in the past four
games and the fifth time this year that he paced the club in that
category. Resnick and Greven each finished with 12 points
with Resnick's total marking a career high. Claunch and
Gulotta each chipped in 11 points while sophomore Michael Friedberg
and Oh added to the team's balanced scoring attack with 10
points apiece. It marked just the second time in school history
that an Emory team had seven double-figure scorers. The
previous time took place on Jan. 29, 1988, in a 104-88 win over
Piedmont.
Emory returns to action tomorrow evening (Jan. 3) when it hosts
Piedmont in an 8:00 p.m. tip.
