Emory 10, Piedmont 3
Piedmont 3, Emory 2
A seven-run uprising in the eighth inning gave Emory a 10-3 victory
over Piedmont College Tuesday night and salvaged a split of a
doubleheader. Piedmont captured the opening contest by a 3-2
margin. Emory now stands 24-14 on the year while the Lions
own a 24-10 mark.
Highlighting the evening for Emory was senior Cassie
Walsh becoming the school's all-time leader in
hits. Walsh, who entered the twinbill tied for the top spot
with Lauren Dix (2000-03) with 220 safeties, collected five hits
over the two games. Her single in the second inning of the
first game enabled her to move into the top spot.
In the opening game, Emory outhit the hosts by a 12-7 margin but
stranded eight runners. Senior Caitlin Fitzgerald
picked up three hits while Walsh, along with freshmen Ellyn
Kocoloski and Meaghan Schultz,
contributed a pair. Emory scored a run in the first when
Kocoloski came through with a two-out single the scored
Fitzgerald. The Eagles tacked on another run the following
frame when a sacrifice fly by freshman Brittany
Boeshore pushed home Jennifer Haag.
Piedmont bounced back with a three-run fifth inning that was keyed
by a two-run single by Rebecca Renfroe. Emory was retired in
order in the sixth and collected a pair of hits in the seventh but
could not tie the contest.
The Eagles continued their hot-hitting ways in the second affair,
rapping out a dozen hits while Piedmont recorded a nine-hit
attack. Walsh registered three hits in five trips to the
plate while Fitzgerald spanked out a pair of hits while
contributing three RBIs. Emory broke a 1-1 tie in the top of
the sixth when it scored twice, with sophomore Jessica
Boni and freshman Stephanie Horn coming
through with RBIs. Piedmont battled back to knot the game
with two runs in the seventh to force extra innings. Using
the tiebreaker system, Jenna Lamoreaux was placed
on second and scored when freshman Dana Goodenough
singled. After the next two Emory batters were retired, the
floodgates opened with the team scoring six more times.
Fitzgerald's bases-loaded double, her tenth two-bagger of the
year, was a key blast as it scored three runs. Sophomore
Bridget Holloway earned the win on the mound for
the Eagles, tossing 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief, raising her
season record to 15-9.
Emory returns to action on Thursday (Apr. 22) when it plays a pair
of games at LaGrange College starting at 5:00 p.m.
