Washington University 8, Emory 1
Emory 3, Brandeis 1
After battling mother nature the past couple of days, the Emory
University softball team resumed action at the University
Athletic Association Tournament Championship on Saturday. The
Eagles split a pair of contests, dropping an 8-1 decision to No.
6-ranked Washington University before regrouping to notch a 3-1
triumph over Brandeis. The split leaves the Eagles'
overall record at 10-8, 4-2 in the UAA.
In Saturday's opener, Emory fell into a hole after Wash U.
scored five runs in its half of the third inning. The Eagles
accounted for their lone run of the game in the top of the fourth
when a two-out single by sophomore Jen Haag scored Jessica
Boni. The Bears put the game out of reach when it tacked on
three more runs in the sixth.
After getting roughed up by Wash U earlier in the day, sophomore
pitcher Bridget Holloway turned in a superb performance on the
mound against Brandeis, going all seven innings and giving up just
five hits while striking out seven. The Emory bats kept the
pressure on the Judges all evening, totaling 11 hits including
three extra-base safeties. Freshman Ellen Kocoloski went 3-for-3
with a pair of RBIs while senior Cassie Walsh chipped in a pair of
hits. Emory picked up its initial run in the first frame,
putting together three consecutive two-out hits, with sophomore
Jessica Thomas' single driving in senior Caitlin
Fitzgerald. A single by Kocoloski in the third pushed home
junior Nikki Perez while her double in the fifth enabled pinch
runner Michelle Geannakakes to score.
Emory will close out UAA Tournament action on Sunday with games vs.
Rochester (10:00 a.m.) and Case Western (12:30
p.m.).
