The Emory men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Washington
University squad Sunday afternoon as the Eagles dropped a road
decision to the No. 3-ranked Bears. Emory saw its overall
record fall to 13-7, 5-4 in the University Athletic Association as
it fell by an 83-69 margin to Wash U. who upped its overall slate
to 17-3, 8-1 in the league.
The host Bears ended the contest shooting 54.7 percent from the
field (29-of-53) while Emory checked in at 45.6 percent
(26-of-57). Both teams finished over 40 percent from
three-point range with Wash U. sinking 43.5 percent (10-of-23) and
the Eagles 40.9 percent (9-of-22). The host club converted
15-of-22 from the charity stripe while Emory was successful on all
eight of its opportunities. The Eagles were outrebounded by a
36-21 count.
Wash U got out of the blocks quickly, sinking eight of its first 12
field goal attempts, while the Eagles converted just two-of-11, in
claiming a 19-5 edge with 11:36 left in the first half. A
14-9 run by Emory, keyed by a pair of three-point field goals by
Austin Claunch, kept it in the contest, trailing by a 28-19 score
with 4:55 remaining. The Bears would go into halftime with a
39-26 advantage, hitting 53.8 percent from the floor (14-of-26)
while Emory was successful on 32.1 percent (9-of-28). Daniel
Curtin and Claunch totaled 10 and eight points, respectively, to
pace the team's point production during the opening 20 minutes of
play while Cameron Smith of Wash U notched 12 first-half
points.
Emory's attempt to make inroads into the 13-point obstacle was
stymied by a Wash U 12-2 run that opened the second half, upping
its lead to 51-28 with 14:28 on the clock. The Bears
maintained a cushion of 20 or more points for most of the next 10
minutes and eventually built a 28-point lead with 5:41 on the
clock. With a number of reserves from both teams on the
floor, Emory rattled off a 13-0 run over a 3:19 stretch to cut the
Bears advantage to 80-66 late in the game.
Claunch led the Emory scoring attack with 13 points, hitting
five-of-nine from the field including three-of-five from
three-point range. Curtin was the club's other double-figure
scorer with 12 points, going five-of-10 from the floor including
two-of-three from distance.
Spencer Gay of Wash U. led all players with 18 points and 11
rebounds.
Emory returns to action on Friday (Feb. 12) when it plays at
Carnegie Mellon University.
