Emory senior Daniel Curtin scored a season-high 24 points to lead
three double-figure scorers this evening in helping the Eagles to a
win at home against Carnegie Mellon University. The Eagles
raised their overall record to 8-4, 1-1 in University Athletic
Association action, following an 80-67 triumph over the Tartans who
slipped to 4-6 (0-1 UAA).
Emory shot a solid 48.1 percent from the floor (26-of-54) including
45 percent from three-point range (9-of-20). The Eagles were
sharp from the foul line as well, sinking 76.0 percent (19-of-26)
from the stripe. CMU ended the evening hitting 38.1 percent
of its field goal attempts (24-of-63). Emory finished with a
36-33 margin on the glass and was led in that department by senior
Chad Hixon who snatched 12 boards, his third double-figure effort
in that category this year.
Curtin ended the night hitting eight-of-11 from the floor,
including five-of-seven from beyond the arc, in registering his
second performance of 20 or more points this season. Aiding
in the win was senior Anthony Fernandez who checked in with a
season-high 15 points on the strength of seven-of-10 field goal
shooting. Sophomore guard Austin Claunch chipped in 12 points
and five assists.
Emory got off to a blistering start, knocking down 14 of its first
24 field goal opportunities in racing to a 35-20 lead with 7:05
left in the first half. Curtin played a vital role in that
stretch picking up 14 points, converting five of his first six
field goal tries including four-of-five from three-point
range. Curtin totaled 16 points during the opening 20 minutes
of play as Emory built a 41-28 edge at the intermission.
Emory led by 15 points, 47-32, with 17:37 left on the clock
following a basket by Fernandez, but the Tartans put on a
determined rally with a 20-8 run that cut the Eagles' margin to
three points, 55-52, with 10:35 on the clock. Emory then
regrouped and rattled off the game's next nine points, with
Fernandez scoring the first four, and reclaimed control of the
contest, 64-52, with 7:04 remaining. The lead would stay in
double digits for the remainder of the evening as the Eagles raised
their record at the Woodruff PE Center to 4-2 this year.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday (Jan. 10) with a home game
against Case Western starting at noon.
