Emory freshman Alex Greven scored 13 of his team-high 16 points in
the second half and the Eagles rallied from 10-point deficit midway
through the second half by closing out the game with a furious 32-9
run in earning a road win at No. 15 Brandeis Sunday
afternoon. Emory captured its fifth straight win and boosted
its overall record to 12-4, 4-1 in the University Athletic
Association, good for a first-place tie, following a 77-64 win over
the Judges who slipped to 12-3 overall, 3-2 in the league.
Greven finished the game hitting four-of-seven from the floor,
including three-of-four from three-point range, and five-of-six
free throw attempts in registering his ninth double-figure scoring
effort of the year. Greven's offensive exploits off the bench
helped the Eagles post a decisive 37-10 edge in reserve
points. Sophomore guard Austin Claunch rounded out the team's
double-figure scorers with 11 points while doling out five assists.
Seniors Anthony Fernandez, Chad Hixon and Daniel Curtin all added
nine points with Hixon grabbing a team-high nine boards.
Emory held a 38-30 lead early in the second half before Brandeis
fought back with a 14-4 run, capped by a basket by Andre Roberson,
that gave it a 44-42 advantage. After a three-point field
goal by Alex Gulotta enabled Emory to re-claim the lead, the Judges
scored the game's next 11 points to post a 55-45 cushion with just
over 10 minutes left in the game. From there, Emory took
control of the contest. A jumper by Curtin with 4:36 left
closed out a 13-3 Eagles' scoring run and knotted the affair at
58-58. With the scored tied at 60-60, Greven nailed
back-to-back three-point field goals that started a 10-0 streak
that pushed the score to 70-60 in Emory's favor. After four
straight points by the Judges cut their deficit to six points with
1:25 left, the Eagles finished the afternoon by sinking
seven-of-eight from the foul line, sealing the outcome of the
game.
Emory ended the afternoon shooting 44.4 percent from the floor
(24-of-54) compared to Brandeis' effort of 38.6 percent
(22-of-57). The Eagles hit six-of-16 from beyond the arc
while Brandies made just one-of-17 from distance.
Down by a 19-16 margin just past the midway point in the first
half, the Eagles rattled off a 9-0 run, with four different players
scoring, which gave them a 25-19 edge with 6:50 left in the
stanza. After a pair of free throws by the Judges'Terrell
Hollins drew Brandeis to within 26-24, Emory responded with a 7-0
run, sparked by five points by Claunch that upped its margin to
33-24 with 2:52 left. The Eagles would go into the locker room at
halftime the owners of a 36-30 lead with Hixon scoring seven points
and Claunch, Julien Williams and Fernandez chipping in five
points. Emory connected on 48.3 percent from the floor during
the opening 20 minutes of play compared to 37.9 percent
(11-of-29). The Eagles knocked down three three-point field
goals while Brandeis misfired on all nine of its opportunities.
The Eagles return to action on Friday (Jan. 29) when it hosts
Chicago.
