The Emory University women's tennis team opened its fall season on Friday with the first day of the North Georgia Invitational in Dahlonega. The Eagles as a team went 8-1 in singles action and added a 5-3 mark in doubles.

In doubles play, the pairing of Holyn Karp and Visnja Gusavac advanced to the finals of the A draw with two victories as they took down Young Harris (6-2) and Lenoir-Rhyne (6-4). Additionally in the A draw, the tandem of Yanire Marte and Devin Gilroy won 7-6 (3) over Georgia Gwinnett in the opening round before falling to UNG's pair of Poppe/Stokusova 6-3 in the draw's semifinals.

In the B and C draws, Emory's tandems of Jessy Chen/Audrey Pogue and Sara Nenkov/Rachel Hernandez both went 1-1 with 7-5 triumphs in the opening rounds before falling in their respective bracket's semifinals.

For singles action, Gusavac won via retirement in her A flight match 7-5, 2-0 while Marte (6-0, 6-0) and Hernandez (6-0, 6-2) spotlighted the Eagles with straight set wins in the B draw as Emory's top entries. In the C flight, Karp (6-0, 6-0) and Gilroy (6-2, 6-4) shined for the Eagles. Emory added a victory from Nenkov (6-1, 6-0) in the E draw while both Pogue and Daniela Livson picked up wins from retirements to round out the first day of competition.

The North Georgia Invitational will conclude on Saturday with the final matches in singles and doubles starting at 9:00 AM.
