The Emory softball team split the first two games of a three-game series against #7 WashU Friday afternoon, with the Bears taking game one 2-7 before the Eagles won game two 2-1 off a walk off single from freshman pinch-hitter
Alejandra Wittman.
With the series split 1-1, the stage is set for Saturday's finale to decide the 2026 University Athletic Association champion.
Game 1: WashU 7, Emory 2
The game began with a trio of scoreless innings before an RBI single gave WashU the 1-0 edge. The Eagles wasted no time crafting a response as
Ellie Zerr smoked a triple to center field, scoring
Megan Sutton to make it 1-1 going into a scoreless fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth, an RBI from WashU gave them a one-run lead. They tacked onto that lead in the sixth, scoring on a sac fly and a throwing error to give the Bears a 4-1 advantage.
The final frame saw three runs from WashU as they scored on a sac bunt and a two-run homer to extend their lead to 7-1, but the Eagles scored their second run on a Sutton RBI to bring the final score to 7-2.
Game 2: Emory 2, WashU 1
The Bears got on the board early with an RBI single in the first inning, but Emory responded in the bottom of the second as
Zoe Horning stole third and scored on a throwing error to tie it at 1-1 going into the third.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh when the Eagles pulled out the theatrics. With two runners on base, Wittman was called upon to pinch hit and delivered, smoking a single out to right field to allow
Radha Samuel to race around third for the winning run, sliding in under the catcher's tag to give the Eagles the 2-1 win to even the series.
Senior pitcher
Mackenzie Duford shined in the circle for the Eagles in the walk off win, setting down the Bears for six scoreless innings following the run in the first to turn in a complete game with one run on seven hits and eight strikeouts.
The Eagles will celebrate Senior Day and play for a UAA Championship tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in their final home game of the regular season.
