The Emory University softball team closed out their non-conference slate Wednesday afternoon, sweeping #9 Huntingdon in a road doubleheader before taking on NYU this weekend.
Game 1: Emory 8, Huntingdon 6
The Eagles got a pair of runs on the board early thanks to a pair of sac flies from
Ellie Zerr and
Lillian Ware to give Emory the 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
With Huntingdon unable to respond in their half of the first, the momentum kept going the Eagles' way in the second as
Allie Stevenson scored Emory's third run on a passed ball. Later in the inning, an RBI single from Zerr brought in
Ashley Chu and
Zoe Horning to extend the Emory lead to 5-0.
The third inning went scoreless on both sides before
Addison Kwong hit a monster triple in the top of the fourth, scoring
Megan Sutton to add more insurance to the Eagles lead.
The Hawks found the board in the home half of the fourth, scoring on a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-1 going into the fifth.
In the top of the fifth, Sutton batted in a pair of runs as she scored
Shea Johnson and Horning on an RBI single to give the Eagles a seven-run lead.
Despite the Eagles 8-1 lead, the Hawks began their comeback campaign as they plated another run on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth before putting together a four-run frame in the sixth to make it 8-6 going into the final inning.
With the win on the line and a Hawk on base,
Mackenzie Duford came in to pitch for the Eagles in the seventh, holding off the final two batters as the Eagles beat the Hawks 8-6.
Game 2: Emory 6, Huntingdon 3
After a scoreless first inning, Emory found the board first as another triple from Kwong and an error from the Huntingdon second baseman gave the Eagles the 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Chu hit a single through the left side with the bases loaded, scoring
Ella Hoyle to make it 2-0.
In the top of the third, the Eagles extended their lead off an error by the right fielder that helped Ware score, adding another run to the Eagles lead. Another pair of runs came off Sutton's bat in the top of the fourth as she scored Chu and Johnson on a two RBI single to bring the score to 5-0.
After three scoreless innings for the Hawks, they plated their only three runs in the bottom of the fourth to close in on the lead as they made it 5-3.
The fifth and sixth innings went scoreless on both sides before the Eagles tacked on another run in the top of the sixth as a single from Hoyle brought
Radha Samuel home, giving the Eagles a 6-3 win as the Hawks failed to bounce back in the final inning.
Senior pitcher
Mackenzie Duford shined for the Eagles in the circle in game two coming off the game one save, going all seven innings as she allowed three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts to earn her sixth win of the season.
The Eagles will be back on the road this weekend as they head to the Bronx, NY to take on NYU in their final road series of the season, with the first game set for Friday at 5:30 p.m.
