Adam Geller's Complete Game Highlights Baseball's Saturday Split at #14 WashU

The Emory University baseball team split the doubleheader with No. 14 WashU on Saturday in St. Louis.

Senior Adam Geller shined in the first game of the afternoon as he spun a complete game to lead the Eagles to a 5-2 win before the Bears spoiled another late-inning rally by the Eagles to win 9-8 in the night cap.

Game 1: Emory 5, WashU 2

Geller tossed 104 pitches for the nine-inning complete game as he improved to 4-1 on the season. He allowed a pair of earned runs on five hits over his nine frames while striking out five. Geller sent down the first nine batters he faced and only saw one inning where more than one Bear reached base safely.

The Eagles supplied Geller with run support starting in the third inning when freshman Connor Tam launched a solo home run before junior Zach Hanson picked up an RBI double to plate classmate Jake Lawson later in the inning.

Leading 3-1, Emory padded its lead in the fifth when junior Jonathan Lang pushed home Tam with a groundout to third prior to senior Adrien Armstrong driving in a pair with a single during the next at bat.

Geller surrendered a lead off solo home run in the seventh before he retired nine of the final 10 WashU hitters to come to plate to close out the complete game.

Game 2: WashU 9, Emory 8

Following Friday's heroics, the Eagles looked to have more theatrics in store as Emory erased another WashU lead with a late-inning rally. However, it was short lived as the Bears scored in each of their trips to the plate in the eighth and ninth to record the walk off win over the Eagles.

Trailing 7-3 entering the top of the eighth, Emory batted around the lineup with five coming around to score to take an 8-7 lead. Armstrong worked a bases-loaded walk to start the score before junior Corey Goldstick and Tam provided two-run singles to propel Emory into the lead.

The lead was brief however as WashU found the game-tying run in the bottom of the eighth as Shane Pellegrino smacked a two-out double off the left centerfield wall to plate Anthony Equale.

The Eagles saw two runners reach base in the ninth with Lang and freshman Ryan Roggin working a single and a walk in consecutive plate appearances but neither could come around to score.

In the Bears' ninth frame, Chance Cromer led off the inning with a walk and came around to score following two singles during the inning including the game-winning hit off the bat of Equale with one out.

Emory will look to close out the series win on Sunday when the final game of the weekend set gets underway at 12:00 PM ET / 11:00 AM CT in St. Louis.
