The Emory University baseball team pulled off more late-game heroics on Friday as the Eagles rallied from a three-run deficit in the ninth inning to stun No. 14 WashU in the series opener at Irv Utz Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri.
Trailing 3-0 entering their final turn at the plate, Emory scored four times including a go-ahead, three-run home run from junior Jake Lawson to defeat the Bears, 4-3. With the win, the Eagles improve to a two-game lead in the UAA title chase at 7-2 while WashU drops to 5-4 and in a tie for second place.
Senior Josh Zuckerman was tagged with three runs early before settling in for seven innings of work where he allowed the three runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out nine Bears.
For WashU, starter Chase Brickley stymied the Eagles over his seven frames, allowing only six base runners to reach as he racked up nine punch outs. Reliever Parker Guthrie posted a clean eighth inning in his first appearance out of the bullpen prior to Emory rallying in the ninth.
Three out of the first four Eagles to start the ninth reached base safely, with freshman Ryan Roggin and graduate student Mark Serdinak picking up singles prior to freshman Connor Tam recording an infield single to plate Roggin with Emory's first run. Lawson then stepped to the plate and launched the 2-2 offering over the right field fence for the go-ahead blast.
Junior Mihir Patel registered his first win of the season with a scoreless eighth and sophomore Reed Edwards nailed down his second save, striking out two WashU hitters as he worked around one walk.
Emory and WashU will continue the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday getting underway at 1:00 PM ET.
