The #23 Emory women's basketball team dropped its second game of the weekend Sunday afternoon, falling to #1 NYU by a score of 78-60 in the home matinee.
Junior

The Eagles started off hot with a three pointer from freshman
Tatum Olson within the first minute of play, while a trio of layups from Mullinax and Loucopoulos gave the Eagles a 9-3 lead early in the first quarter. The Violets started closing in, but a field goal from Kreusser and five points in less than a minute from Strazza helped the Eagles make it 16-12. Another pair of layups from Kreusser and third year
Caroline Connelly gave Emory the two-point lead, but in the final seconds NYU's Brooke Batchelor sank a three to give the Violets their first lead of the game going into the second quarter.
NYU put up the first points of the quarter with a three from Caroline Peper, but the Eagles answered as Loucopoulos made a shot from beyond the arc and Strazza got the layup in the paint to bring the score to 25-25. The Violets then reclaimed the lead as they went on a five-point run, but the Eagles kept fighting thanks to field goals from Loucopoulos and Kreusser. As the clock ran down, the Violets put up a pair of free throws and a layup to extend their lead to 36-29 going into the half.
As the third quarter began, Loucopoulos and Strazza set the tone as they put up the first points, but the Violets responded as a three pointer from Peper fell and a pair of made free throws brought the score to 41-34. The Eagles kept battling as they tried closing in on the lead, but the Violets couldn't be stopped as they went 41.18% from field goal range and went 4-4 from the free throw line in the third quarter. A pair of shots from Loucopoulos put the Eagles within three points of the lead, but NYU responded with five points of their own with 1:57 to go to make the score 51-43. The Eagles would struggle to find the net for the rest of the quarter until a layup from Kreusser in the final moments, putting the Eagles down 57-45 with ten minutes to go.
In the final quarter, Mullinax got the Eagles the opening layup to bring them within ten points, but the Violets would continue to extend their lead despite jumpers from Olson and Kreusser. After another layup from Mullinax, the Violets went on a nine-point scoring run before Tatum could find the net to make it 74-55 with a minute to go. In the final minute, rookies
Lauren Walsh and
Serene Exalant netted field goals to bring the final score to 78-60.
The Eagles will hit the road next weekend to take on Case Western Reserve and RV Carnegie Mellon on Friday and Sunday.
