Loucopoulos & Olson Combine for 51 Points as Women's Basketball Defeats CWRU, 76-73

The Emory University women's basketball team survived a late scare but was able to pull off a 76-73 road win against Case Western Reserve University Friday night in Cleveland.

The Eagles were led by huge scoring performances from junior Alexandra Loucopoulos and freshman Tatum Olson as the duo combined for 51 points in the win. Loucopoulos netting a game-high 27 points on 11-for-25 shooting and knocked down four triples while collecting eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Olson set a new career high with 24 points and added four rebounds and two steals.

The Spartans were in control early Friday night as CWRU rattled off the game's first eight points and led by as many as nine points in the opening quarter and led 17-11 at the end of 10 minutes. The Eagles continued to trail with the Spartans leading 28-19 midway through the second period but a 14-0 run spanning four minutes of game action pushed Emory to its first lead of the game and into the halftime break ahead 35-31. Four different Eagles scored during the scoring binge including eight from Loucoupoulos.

Emory's offense continued to click following the break as Olson and Loucopoulos combined for 20 points in the third quarter as the Eagles outscored CWRU 27-20 in the frame to lead by 11 at the end of 30 minutes.

The Eagles' lead grew to its largest of the night at 15 with a Chloe Kreusser bucket with 7:33 remaining and Emory held a 73-59 edge with 5:42 left to play. However, a flurry of late-game heroics had the Spartans trailing by two at 75-73 with 38 seconds showing and a chance to win the game in closing seconds. Kreusser and the Emory defense stood tall as the clock wound down though, forcing a turnover in the waning moments to seal the road win.

Emory will travel to Pittsburgh on Sunday for the first of two straight against Carnegie Mellon. Tip off with the Tartans is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
