Baseball Falls to Berry 16-6 in Second Straight Loss

The Emory University baseball team was handed another tough loss Friday afternoon as the Eagles were upended by the Berry Vikings 16-6 in seven innings in the first of three games this weekend between the two teams.

Juniors Zach Hanson and Jonathan Lang accounted for four of the teams' six RBIs, but a seven-run inning from the Vikings put a damper on Emory's second game in Chappell Park this season.

The game started slow as the Emory defense went to work and the first inning went scoreless, but a throwing error gave the Vikings their first run in the top of the second inning with two outs on the board.

The third inning was a tough one for the Eagles as an unearned run from Garrett Lang on a throwing error and a double from Berry's Hayden Gilbert to center field brought the score to 5-0. The Eagles struggled to find their footing on defense as the Vikings saw three more unearned runs in the top of the third, bringing the score to 8-0.

With a chance to battle back from a large deficit, Emory responded as a double from Hanson helped Jake Lawson and Corey Goldstick find home plate, improving the score to 8-2 with only one out. The Eagles found another RBI in graduate transfer Mark Serdinak as his single brought Hanson across home plate with a score of 8-3 to end the third frame.

The top of the fourth saw another run from the Vikings, but the Eagles answered with a bomb from Lang to bring him and Mitchell Smallwood home, making the score to 9-5.
The fifth inning saw one run from both teams as an Aidan Conley homer helped the score improve to 10-6.

After a scoreless sixth, the seventh inning was the final nail in the coffin for the Eagles as the Vikings went on a six-run barrage to bring the score to 16-6 and force the mercy rule into effect.
Emory will hit the road tomorrow, facing Berry once again in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM in Mount Berry.
