Berry Takes Saturday Doubleheader from Emory Baseball

The Emory University baseball team had a tough luck afternoon on Saturday as the Eagles fell in both ends of a doubleheader in Mount Berry, Georgia as the Berry College Vikings completed the weekend sweep.

Game 1 – Berry 13, Emory 5

The Eagles' offense had the early advantage as three different Eagles drove in a run during Emory's second frame to give the visitors a 3-1 lead. Senior Zach Wasserlauf and freshman Mario Borges had run-scoring hits and senior Nick Sullo collected a sac fly.

However, more defensive errors led to more runs for the opposition as a pair of fielding errors led to five runs for the Vikings in the third to give Berry the lead back at 6-3.

The Vikings added three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to pad their lead before the Eagles returned to the scoring column in the eighth as junior Jonathan Lang singled home classmate Jake Lawson prior to junior Ryan Carr earning a pinch hit sac fly to cut the deficit to seven.

Berry added one more run in the eighth before sending down three Emory pinch hitters via strikeouts in the ninth to claim the 13-5 win in the opener.

Game 2: Berry 6, Emory 4 (7 innings)

The Vikings scored in each of their first four innings en route to a 6-4 win in the scheduled seven-inning affair.

After Berry struck for two in the home half of the first, the Eagles countered with back-to-back RBIs from junior Corey Goldstick and Sullo to level the score at 2-2.

Emory trailed 6-2 at the end of four run-scoring frames from the Vikings before cutting into the Berry lead with another two spot with in the fifth on a Zach Hanson two-run double to score Lawson and freshman Ryan Roggin.

Graduate student Nic Roma spun two scoreless frames in the fifth and sixth but the Eagles saw just two batters reach base over their final two innings to fall by the 6-4 margin.

The Eagles will look to snap their current four-game skid with a mid-week matchup against LaGrange College on Tuesday, February 17. First pitch from Chappell Park is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
