The Emory University men's soccer team carried the momentum of two second half goals to a 2-0 victory against visiting No. 20 ranked Carnegie Mellon University Saturday afternoon as University Athletic Association play got underway for both programs.
The Eagles avenged last year's loss to the Tartans on the strength of goals from senior Logan Steren and sophomore Jeremiah Cateau as Emory improved to 7-1-2 while the defeat drops the nationally-ranked Tartans to 7-2-2.
Neither side had many scoring chances in the opening half as the score remained deadlocked as zeros. Senior Geoffrey Halpern recorded a pair of highlight saves across the opening 45 minutes to help preserve the scoreless draw.
Emory cashed in finally in the 55th minute when Steren knocked home the loose ball from in front of the left corner following a long-range throw in from graduate student Walker Stebbings. The goal moved Steren into a tie for the team lead with his fifth goal of the season.
Twenty-two minutes later, Cateau provided the insurance score as he drilled a far-range shot off the feed from classmate Justin Buchwalter. The score was Cateau's fourth in an Emory uniform.
Halpern added three more saves in the second half to preserve the clean sheet and the team's fourth shutout over the last five games.
Emory will return to the WoodPEC pitch Tuesday night for a meeting with Piedmont before returning to UAA play next Saturday against Brandeis.
