Men's Soccer Runs Win Streak to Five; Tops Covenant, 5-2, in Non-Conference Finale

The Emory University men's soccer team ran its winning streak to five games Tuesday night, closing out the non-conference slate with a commanding 5-2 win at Covenant College on Lookout Mountain.

Five different Eagles found the back of the net as Emory pushed its unbeaten streak to nine games as well, improving to 10-1-2 on the season heading into the final five games of the regular season. Covenant falls to 3-7-2 on the season following the midweek defeat.

With not much action occurring across the first third of the contest, the Eagles struck with a flurry in the closing minutes of the opening half by scoring twice two minutes apart to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

Sophomore Ewen Robertson broke through the scoreless tie in the 35th minute with his fifth goal in an Emory uniform with junior Jake Breitegan adding the assist. Two minutes later, Breitegan contributed to the Emory lead with his sixth goal of the season, scoring on the feed from Justin Buchwalter.

Leading 2-0, graduate student Walker Stebbings made it a three-goal advantage in the 61st minute, scoring his second goal as am member of the Eagles with fellow transfer Jeremiah Cateau recording the assist.

The Scots made a late push with Ian Adams and Andrew Dillard registering goals in the 62nd and 79th minutes to slash the Emory lead to one at 3-2.

Despite the comeback attempt, the Eagles were able to solidify their road win in the final minutes of regulation with Julian Hee stopping the Covenant run with his first goal in the 83rd minute and freshman Zachary Blacher converting a penalty kick opportunity in the 85th to provide the 5-2 final margin.

The Eagles will return to UAA competition on Saturday with the first of three straight on the road, playing NYU at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey at 11:00 AM.
