Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Phil Engel - Director of Communications & Sports Information

#9 Women's Basketball Falters at #1 NYU in Sunday Matinee

The No. 9 ranked Emory University women's basketball team dropped its second game of the weekend road trip Sunday afternoon, falling to top-ranked New York University by a score of 93-66 at the John Paulson Center in New York.

Junior Alexandra Loucopoulos and freshman Tatum Olson paced the Eagles in the top-10 matchup with Loucopoulos netting a team-leading 16 points while Olson scored 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting including 3-for-4 from long range. Freshman Lauren Walsh registered a season-best nine points in 16 minutes off the bench.

The Eagles kept paced with the undefeated Violets in the first half with the team going back-and-forth in the first quarter. NYU led by just five points at the end of 10 minutes with Loucopoulos and Olson combining for 11 of Emory's 19 points in the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Eagles were able to remain close and cut it to a six-point game at 34-28 on a Chloe Kreusser layup with 3:32 to go before the half. However, a 6-0 run over the next two minutes pushed the Violets advantage into double digits for the first time on the afternoon prior to taking a 41-32 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter proved to be the difference in the contest as the NYU defense put together a stifling run over the final 7:12 minutes of the period, turning a 49-41 game into a 30-point margin using a 25-3 run to end the quarter with the lone points for the Eagles coming from an Olson triple at the 3:11 mark.

Loucopoulos and Walsh helped the Eagles win the fourth quarter 22-19 by combining for 14 points but Emory could not cut into the large NYU lead.

The Eagles will be back at the WoodPEC next weekend, hosting Case Western Reserve University at 7:30 PM on Friday, January 23.
