Eight Emory University student-athletes were recognized Monday afternoon by being chosen as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for their performances during the week of September 22-28.
Senior Izzy Antanavicius ran the table of the singles draw at the ITA South Regional as she won her first regional title to highlight the women's tennis team this past weekend in Atlanta. The draw's third-seeded player, Antanavicius won four matches including three by straight sets on her way to the finals before she topped teammate and top-seeded Emily Kantrovitz in the championship match 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. Additionally, Antanavicius made a run to the championship match in doubles as she and Erika Olson dropped only three games prior to the championship.
Seniors Kantrovitz and Iris Berman teamed together to form the ITA South Regional top-seeded doubles team with the duo living up to the billing to win Emory's first doubles regional crown since 2021. Kantrovitz/Berman won their first four matches in convincing fashion, dropping only four games including a pair of 8-0 wins, prior to beating teammates Antanavicius/Olson 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match. Additionally, both players made deep runs in the singles draw with Kantrovitz advancing to the championship match and Berman reaching the quarterfinals.
Junior Kevin Mu led the men's golf team to a first place finish last week at the Gate City Invitational. Mu finished with a score of 207 across his three rounds, including a third-round score of 69, to finish second on the individual leaderboard.
Senior Michelle Davidson anchored the women's soccer defensive unit to a pair of shutouts this past week as the No. 2 ranked Eagles defeated a pair of previously unbeaten teams in Oglethorpe and Sewanee to improve to 10-0 – the team's best start in program history. On Tuesday, Davidson played 78 minutes in the team's 3-0 win as Emory held Oglethorpe to three shots, one SOG, across 90 minutes. On Saturday, Davidson played the entirety of Emory's 1-0 win at Sewanee - holding the Tigers to 13 shots with two on goal.
Graduate student Ignacio Cubeddu scored five goals and added an assist as the No. 2 ranked men's soccer team outscored Piedmont and Sewanee by a count of 9-0 this past week to extend their winning streak to 10 games – the team's longest winning streak since 2014. Cubeddu was one of four goal scorers on Wednesday as Emory topped Piedmont, 4-0, before tying a program record with four goals as he was a one-man show at home against Sewanee in the team's 5-0 win.
On the defensive side, junior Michael Constant logged 139 minutes during Emory's two shutouts. On Wednesday, Constant played 66 minutes and had an assist in the four-goal win as the Emory backline limited Piedmont to only three shots, all on goal, in the victory. Then on Saturday night, Constant played 73 minutes in the five-goal win over the previously unbeaten Tigers. Emory held Sewanee to six shots in the game with the Tigers unable to muster a single shot on goal.
Junior Gabija Staniskis had a standout weekend for the volleyball squad during the opening UAA Round Robin tournament, leading the Eagles to an unblemished 3-0 in competition. She finished second in the UAA on the weekend with a .402 hitting percentage with 43 kills which ranked third in the UAA. Staniskis also averaged 3.31 kills per set in Emory's three wins.
