Four Emory University Eagles were tabbed as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for September 8-14 as announced Monday afternoon.
Graduate student Pearse Lucas earned his first weekly honor as an Emory Eagle after leading the men's golf team to another conference championship. Lucas was named the tournament MVP as he round robin competition featured 7up and 4up victories against Carnegie Mellon and NYU.
Senior Josh Grand continued his excellent senior season this past weekend for the No. 3 ranked Emory men's soccer, leading the Eagles to a 2-0 weekend with wins over Maryville and Berry while outscoring both opponents 10-2. Grand, who earned his third consecutive Athlete of the Week honor, contributed a team-leading three goals and added an assist as Emory remained perfect on the year at 6-0. Grand notched a goal and an assist in the team's 7-1 drubbing of Maryville on Friday before converting two penalty kicks on Saturday as the Eagles downed Berry, 3-1.
Junior Logan Steren collected his second AOW award this season after playing all but three minutes in Emory's two wins in Mount Berry. Steren and the Emory defense held Maryville to only four shots as the Eagles won by six goals while Steren notched the team's first goal in the rout. On Saturday, Steren played all 90 minutes as Emory bested the Vikings, holding Berry to six shots (three on goal).
Senior Sophia Garcia garnered the first weekly acclaim for the women's soccer team this season as she went 3-0 between the posts and totaled seven saves as the No. 5 ranked Eagles went unbeaten across three games this past week while recording three shutouts. Garcia posted three saves in both wins over St. Catherine and No. 15 Washington & Lee while playing all 90 minutes and added 45 minutes in goal and contributed the lone save of the contest in Emory's 7-0 defeat of Covenant on Thursday.
