The No. 3 ranked Emory University men's soccer team continued its winning ways Saturday night, extending its season-long winning streak to eight games with a decisive 5-1 win at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas.
The Eagles wasted no time finding the scoring column on the evening as graduate student Ignacio Cubeddu and senior Josh Grand put the Eagles ahead by a score of 2-0 just six minutes into the contest.
Cubeddu was the first to find the back of the net as he ripped a shot through traffic from 23 yards out with his attempt deflecting off a Hendrix defender and into the back corner. Shortly after, Grand doubled the Emory lead as he took advantage of a failed clear attempt and scored from inside the box.
The Warriors countered moments following the Grand tally to cut the Eagles' edge to 2-1 just seven minutes into the game.
Grand returned to the scoring column later in the half as he finished from point blank range following a cross by junior Lorenzo Avalos to increase the lead to 3-1 in the 22nd minute.
The score remained 3-1 for next 60 minutes of game action thanks to stellar work by both teams' goalkeepers. Hendrix' Gregorio Medina turned in several diving stops to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard while junior Geoffrey Halpern picked up two great saves to limit the Warriors' chances.
Junior Michael Constant finally broke through again for the Eagles in the late stages as he headed in a Grand corner kick for his first marker of the campaign in the 83rd minute. Emory tacked on one final tally in the final minute of play when a lapse in the Warriors backline contributed to Emory's fifth goal.
The Eagles thoroughly controlled possession, totaling 28 shots compared to Hendrix's five, and had a 14-5 lead in shots on goal.
Emory is back on the road one more time this month when the team travels to Piedmont on Wednesday before returning home to face Sewanee next Saturday, September 27.
