Track & Field Associate Head Coach Derek Nelson Steps Down; Named Head Coach at Ursinus College

Emory University track and field associate head coach Derek Nelson announced that he will be stepping down from his current position and will be named the next coach at Ursinus College, the team announced on Tuesday morning.

"Since arriving in Atlanta in September 2018 I have been challenged in ways I could never imagine, but rewarded by so many fulfilling experiences," said Nelson. "I leave Emory with a wealth of professional development, a deeper sense of self, and friendships that will last lifetime. I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to have worked alongside so many dedicated coaches, athletes, and athletics staff members. Joining the Ursinus College community is a very exciting opportunity, and I can't wait to get started guiding the track and field program."

Nelson has been a member of the Emory coaching staff since joining as an assistant coach in 2018 before being named the associate head coach in the summer of 2023. During his time on staff, he helped the Eagles to a UAA Championship title, four top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships while mentoring 37 All-America performers.

While interim coach in 2019, Nelson earned the USTFCCCA South/Southeast Region Head Coach of the Year honors and has taken home Assistant Coach of the Year recognition for three consecutive seasons.

"While we are sad to see Derek leave Emory, we are excited for him as he takes on this new challenge," said head coach Linh Nguyen. "He's left a strong impact on our program, elevating our sprint squad to being one of the best in the country. We'd like to thank him for all he's done here and wish him the best of luck at Ursinus."

A native of Davis, California, Nelson transferred from Ripon College to North Central College where he graduated in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in sports management. In his two years at NCC, he competed in seven NCAA Championship meets and earned 3 All-America awards.  While at Ripon, he played football and competed in track and field, qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 400 hurdles.
