Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: 11/5-11/12

Men's Basketball:
Emory men's basketball will have one more tune up with an exhibition game against Augusta at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. They'll then begin the regular season up the road Sunday afternoon as they take on Piedmont in the official season opener.

The squad is ranked third in the D3hoops.com preseason poll after an incredible 2024-25 campaign as they advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the second time in program history. They're returning 12 players from last season's roster with the dynamic senior duo of Jair Knight and Ben Pearce returning to the court for their final seasons in the blue and gold. They were both All-UAA First Team honorees last season and Knight was third in UAA scoring at 19.0 points per game. Pearce also led the conference and earned the sixth-most assists in Division III with 159 assists on the season. Earlier this preseason, they were recognized as d3hoops.com Preseason All-Americans.

Volleyball:
The No. 15 ranked Emory volleyball team is hosting the Emory Invitational this weekend at the WoodPec. They'll have four matches over the course of Friday and Saturday against Randolph-Macon College, No. 12 Ithaca College, Washington and Lee and No. 18 Berry College.

The Eagles are coming off the final UAA Round Robin of the season where they went 1-1 on the day as they defeated Rochester 3-1 and dropped their match against WashU 3-2 in a hard-fought five setter. Junior Gabija Staniskis led the way for the Eagles, posting a career-high 15 kills in the Rochester match before beating that in the second match, putting up 17 kills against WashU. Senior setter Olivia Rabinowitz is just 53 assists away from a career milestone as she enters the weekend at 2,447 in her career.

Swimming and Diving:
Emory Swimming and Diving is staying home this weekend as they host their Fall Invitational meet. The team will compete Friday and Saturday, with competition beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.

The squad is coming off a dominating win in their dual meet against Sewanee a few weeks ago where the Eagles took wins in 31 of the 32 events. Elodie Mitchell, Emma Lunn and Lauren Opitz were standouts on the women's side as they each won two individual events. Carson Kalish and Zachary Spicer led the men's team, each securing two individual event wins on the day.

Women's Basketball:
Emory women's basketball will begin its season on a Texas road trip as they take on Trinity and No. 25 Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Junior and 2024-25 All-Region selection Alexandra Loucopoulos headlines the returners as she begins her third season with the Eagles. Loucopoulos averaged 11.8 points per game last season and ranked fifth in the UAA in steals with 44 on the season.

Men's Soccer:
The No. 6 men's soccer team will conclude the regular season on the road as they take on Rochester Saturday afternoon.

The team is coming off a road shutout win against Case Western Reserve last weekend, with the Eagles defeating the Spartans 1-0 and marking the third consecutive win for the team against CWRU. Logan Steren scored the lone goal for the Eagles in the 68th minute off the assist from grad student Jack Burgess. Geoffrey Halpern put on an award-winning performance as he picked up three saves on the match to earn him UAA Athlete of the Week honors.

Women's Soccer:
The No. 2 ranked women's soccer team is on the road this weekend as they take on No. 15 Rochester Saturday night to conclude the regular season.

The squad took down No. 5 CWRU last weekend, earning their fourth conference win of the season and their sixth win against a ranked opponent. Sophomore Emory Bozzuti scored the lone goal for the Eagles late in the second half thanks to an assist from junior Katie Hungness. Sophia Garcia held things down for the Eagles on defense, recording a season-high six saves to earn her UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week honors.
Head Coach Sue Patberg is one win away from a career milestone as she enters the weekend standing at 399 career victories, boasting an overall record of 399-166-73 over her coaching career.
