The Emory University baseball team suffered its first defeat of regional play Saturday night, falling to the host Lynchburg Hornets by a score of 10-1 under the lights at Worthington Field at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The Eagles now drop into the elimination bracket of the Lynchburg regional and will be pitted against the Maryville College Scots in a rematch of Friday's NCAA opener where Emory won 7-1.
Lynchburg were the early aggressors on the evening as the Hornets plated two in the first, one in the second and two more in the third to lead by a 5-1 margin through three full innings. Emory's lone tally came in the second when senior
Brok Liu scored sophomore
Mitchell Smallwood from first with a triple into the right centerfield gap.
The Hornets added additional runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames to increase the lead to nine.
Across the final six innings, the Eagles saw just three hitters reach base with sophomore
Jake Lawson and Liu collecting doubles in the fifth and seventh and senior
Jack Halloran reaching first on an error in the sixth.
First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 10:00 AM at James C. Fox Field on Lynchburg's campus. The winner of the morning's contest will advance to game one of the regional finals against the host Hornets at 1:30 PM.
