The Emory University baseball team saw its season come to an end Sunday afternoon, falling in the regional final of 2025 NCAA Championships in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The Eagles survived one elimination game to start the day, defeating Maryville College, 6-3, behind standout performances by juniors Adam Geller and Zach Wasserlauf but came out on the opposite end to the host Lynchburg Hornets in the second game of the afternoon.
Game 1: Emory 6, Maryville 3
Geller turned in one of his finer pitching performances of his career with Emory staving off elimination as he worked into the eighth inning to deliver the win.
Geller did not allow a hit until the fourth frame and carried a shutout into the sixth before he finished with a career high 7.1 innings pitched. He allowed three runs, with two coming across in his final inning, and struck out four Scots.
Senior Blake Dincman fired the opening shot Sunday morning as his RBI single in the first out the Eagles ahead early.
In the third, Wasserlauf picked up a run-scoring hit as he played senior Jack Halloran.
The Scots cut into the Emory lead with a run in the sixth but the Eagles were able to put up a crooked number in the seventh. Dincman started the rally with another RBI single before Wasserlauf launched a three-run home run to left to give EU a 6-1 lead.
Maryville mounted a comeback in the eighth as three of the first four batters reached base to knock Geller from the contest.Â
Senior Bennett Speicher allowed two inherited runners to score but was ultimately was able to end the threat. In the ninth, he slammed the door with a perfect frame to send the Eagles into the regional final.
Game 2: Lynchburg 6, Emory 5
Needing to defeat the Hornets twice to advance to Super Regionals, Lynchburg did not make it easy for the visiting Eagles.
Lynchburg jumped out to an early lead, scoring four times against starter JT Rattigan in the opening frame.
Staked to a 4-0 deficit which then grew to 6-0, the Emory offense took a bit to get moving as the Eagles had just one hit at the end of six.Â
However, Emory mounted its own rally in the seventh as they were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the midst of a five-run inning.
Sophomore Jonathan Lang helped break through in the inning as he had a clutch two-run, pinch-hit single to slash the Lynchburg lead to 6-2. Senior Brok Liu added a RBI single and sophomore Jake Lawson worked a bases loaded walk, forcing the Hornets to make a pitching change.
Sophomore Aidan Conley plated the fifth run of the game for Emory, scoring Liu on a fielders choice, but could not came through with the game-tying hit.
Leading 6-5, Lynchburg was able to retire six of the seven batters that stepped to the plate to thwart any opportunity of another Emory rally.
The Eagles end the season with a 28–16 overall record and reached the NCAA postseason for the first time since the 2017 campaign.Â
