The Emory University softball program dropped both games of its doubleheader against the Case Western Reserve University Spartans on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia.
The No. 21 Eagles now hold a 21-4 record on the season with a 7-2 record in conference play after going 1-2 this weekend.
Game 1: Case Western Reserve 5, Emory 4
After a quick first inning from both pitchers, the Spartans opened the top of the second with a double to left center field for the first hit of the day. The Eagles were able to follow with two quick outs to keep CWRU scoreless. Emory was also able to get a hit in the bottom half of the inning, but Spartans standout Lexi Miskey got out of the inning unharmed.
The next few innings were quiet from both sides before the Spartans opened the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles and an error from the Eagles' defense to load the bases. The next three batters saw three straight runs forcing a pitching change for Emory.
A pitching change for the Spartans in the bottom of the sixth inning started a scoring rally for the Eagles. Emory got two base runners on with a single and a walk followed by an RBI triple from
Lillian Ware to cut into CWRU's lead. In the next at bat, freshman
Megan Sutton doubled to left center to bring in the tying run.
The Spartans answered with a scoring run of their own in the top of the seventh inning scoring two more runs on two hits and an error from Emory's defense for a 5-3 lead. The Eagles added a fourth run in the bottom of the seventh, but CWRU got out of the inning to secure the win and break Emory's win streak.
Game 2: CWRU 6, Emory 5
For the first time in the series, the Eagles were able to strike first in the bottom of the first inning with junior
Ashley Chu leading things off with a walk and later advanced to third. Fellow junior
Ella Hoyle was able to drive Chu home with an RBI double for the first run of the game. Later in the bottom of the second, a walk and two singles loaded the bases for Emory before a walk to freshman
Addison Kwong gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Case Western Reserve was able to tack on another run in the top of the fourth inning on two hits in the inning before later taking a 3-2 lead on an RBI double in the top of the fifth. The Spartans struck again in the top of the sixth inning scoring two runs on two hits for a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore
Ella Janish started the inning with a double to left field followed by an RBI single from Kwong. In the next at bat, sophomore
Ellie Zerr tied the game at five apiece with a monster home run to left center.
The Spartans were able to reclaim the lead in the top of the seventh inning on a walk and a double, but junior
Isabel Cohen was able to get out of a bases loaded jam to hold CWRU to the one run lead.
Emory was unable to answer the call in the bottom of the seventh and fell by a score of 6-5 in the second game.
The Eagles will hit the road for a mid-week matchup at Agnes Scott on Wednesday, April 9 beginning at 3:00 PM.
