The Emory University softball team earned their fifth conference win and 12
th straight win of the season sweeping the doubleheader against the Carnegie Mellon Tartans on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles improve to 19-2 on the season and start conference play with a 5-0 record. The team played two games on Saturday resuming game one from Friday after it was suspended in the bottom of the first inning.
Emory's pitching staff was the highlight of the day allowing just four runs while junior
Mackenzie Duford earned her eighth win of the season. Sophomore
Lexi Bach also earned a win on the day improving to 5-2 on the season.
Game 1: Emory 5, Carnegie Mellon 1
In the top of the first on Friday, the Eagles struck early with an RBI double from sophomore
Ellie Zerr before the game was suspended. After play resumed on Saturday, the Tartans added a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single, but Duford was able to get out of the inning.
The game was scoreless again until the top of the sixth inning with freshman
Addison Kwong leading off the inning with a single to center field. With two outs, freshman
Shivani Nangia drove her second home run of the season reclaiming the lead for Emory. The Eagles were able to get two more base runners before sophomore
Lillian Ware singled through the left side for a 4-1 Emory lead.
Zerr continued her dominating performance with another RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to score junior
Ashley Chu for the fifth run of the game. Duford got three quick outs in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the win in game one.
Game 2: Emory 5, Carnegie Mellon 3
After a quick first inning from both teams, Zerr opened the top of the second inning with a solo shot to right center for an early 1-0 Eagle lead. The Eagles were able to get another runner on base but Carnegie Mellon pitchers got out of the inning without another run.
Both teams were scoreless through the next two innings with the Eagles adding two more runs in the top of the fourth. Junior
Ella Hoyle started the rally with a single followed by two walks to load the bases. Sophomore
Sonia Klein brought in the second run for Emory with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Hoyle followed by another sacrifice fly from teammate
Grace Cooper giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Emory added their fourth run just an inning later with Chu scoring on a wild pitch after starting the inning with an infield single. The Tartans answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning notching three hits in the inning.
In the top of the fifth, Chu recorded her first RBI of the weekend with a triple to right center to take a 5-1 lead over the Tartans. Carnegie Mellon added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but Bach re-entered the game and got two quick outs to secure the second win of the day.
The Eagles are scheduled to play game three of the series on Sunday, March 30 at 10:00 AM in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
