Zerr’s Seven RBI Push #21 Emory Past Carnegie Mellon in Series Finale

The Emory University softball team completed their second straight UAA sweep of the season with an 11-7 win on Sunday afternoon.
 
The No. 21 ranked Eagles improve to 20-2 on the season and earn their sixth conference win of the season. Emory was led by sophomore Ellie Zerr who notched a career-high seven RBI in the win, the fifth best in program history.
 
The Eagles struck early in the top of the first inning with freshman Addison Kwong starting things off with a single to center field. Zerr notched her second home run of the series during the next at bat to give Emory a 2-0 lead.
 
Carnegie Mellon struck next in the bottom of the second inning scoring a run on three hits but Selvaraj was able to get out of the inning after the duo of Lillian Ware and Grace Cooper caught a runner stealing to end the inning.
 
Emory notched another scoring rally in the top of the third inning with Kwong opening with a single before advancing on an error from the Tartans' defense. Zerr followed win an infield single before stealing second allowing Kwong to score on an error from the catcher. Junior Ella Hoyle brought in the fourth and fifth runs of the game with a two-run shot to left field.
 
The Tartans went on a rally of their own in the bottom of the third inning scoring five runs on six hits to take a 6-5 lead over the Eagles. They added their seventh run in the bottom of the fourth on a double and a sacrifice fly.
 
The Eagles were able to get two base runners in scoring position during the top of the fifth inning but Carnegie Mellon pitchers were able to get out of the inning without allowing the tying run to score.
 
Zerr was able to bring the Eagles back into the game and reclaim the lead adding more RBI to her total in the top of the sixth inning. After a hit by pitch and back-to-back singles, Zerr drove a grand slam to left centerfield giving Emory a 9-7 lead. She followed with another RBI single in the top of the seventh, her seventh of the game, while Hoyle followed with the 11th run of the game.
 
After entering in relief earlier in the game, junior Mackenzie Duford recorded three quick outs in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the win.
 
The Eagles will return to Atlanta on Friday, April 4 to face the Case Western Reserve Spartans at 3:00 PM for game one of the series.
