Softball Completes Sweep of Brandeis with Doubleheader Wins on Saturday Afternoon

The Emory University softball team won their 10th straight game on Saturday afternoon completing the three-game sweep over the Brandeis Judges at Cooper Field.

The No. 23 ranked Eagles improve to 17-2 on the season, the team's best record after 19 games since 2016, and start conference play with a 3-0 record. Junior Ashley Chu saw career numbers totaling four stolen bases in the first game while sophomore Lexi Bach and freshman Lauryn Selvaraj both earned their fifth wins of the season in the circle.

Game 1: Emory 13, Brandeis 3 (5 innings)

After a quick three outs in the top of the first from Bach, Chu started the bottom of the inning with a walk and her first stolen base of the day. After Chu advanced to third, she was brought home on an RBI single from sophomore Ellie Zerr. Junior Ella Hoyle followed with a single and advanced to second on the throw allowing Zerr to score on a groundout. Freshman Shivani Nangia followed with an RBI double for Emory's third run of the game before later scoring on an error from the Judges.

The Judges scored their first run of the game in the top of the second with the first batter driving a solo shot to left field. Bach was able to get three quick outs and hold Brandeis to just one run after two innings.

Chu continued her dominating performance starting the bottom of the second with a double followed by a walk from fellow speedster Rylie Ballog. They both notched a stolen base in the inning followed by a sacrifice fly from Hoyle to five the Eagles a 5-1 lead. Emory tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third inning on a wild pitch and an RBI single from Chu for a six-run advantage.

Emory's offense exploded in the bottom of the fourth inning adding six more runs taking advantage of five errors from Brandeis in the inning.

Game 2: Emory 6, Brandeis 2

Unlike the first game, both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings with the Eagles not getting their first hit until the third inning. Sophomore Lillian Ware kicked things off in the bottom of the third with a single to left followed by two more singles to load the bases.

Sophomore Ella Janish came into the game taking a bases loaded walk for the first run of the game followed by a two RBI single from Zerr giving Emory a 3-0 lead.  With two outs, Nangia drove her first career home run to left field scoring three more runs for the Eagles in the third.

Brandeis struck next in the top of the fifth inning scoring their two runs of the game with a double, a single and a sacrifice fly allowing runners to score but Selvaraj was able to close the inning without allowing another run.

The Eagles were able to load the bases again in the bottom of the sixth but the effort fell short and the Judges were able to get out of the jam. After the first out of the seventh, junior Isabel Cohen came into the came in relief looking to close out the game. She did just that as the Judges stranded two base runners in the inning and Emory clinched the sweep.

Emory will travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania next weekend to face the Carnegie Mellon Tartans in a three game series beginning at 3:00 PM on Friday, March 28.
