Women’s Basketball Closes Road Trip with 73-58 win over Case Western Reserve

The Emory University women's basketball program finished their weekend trip with a 73-58 victory over the Case Western Reserve University Spartans on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles improve to 13-7 on the season and advance to 5-4 in conference play while pushing the Spartans to a 7-13, 2-7 UAA record. Emory was led offensively by sophomore Alexandra Loucopoulos who had a career-best day with 19 points and five rebounds. Fellow sophomore Mary Mullinax notched her second double-double of the season posting 11 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Lily Kennedy helped the Eagles at the line going 7-7 in free throws good for 13 total points.

After the Eagles opened the first two minutes of the game with a 4-2 lead, CWRU followed with seven straight points in the next two minutes to reclaim a 9-4 lead. Points from Kennedy brought Emory back within reach of the lead but a layup in the paint from the Tartans pushed them back to an 11-8 advantage. Mullinax sank a late three to tie the game at 11 apiece but CWRU ended the first quarter with a layup to hold a 13-11 lead.

The first three minutes of the second quarter was all CWRU opening with five points to broaden their lead. Senior Erin Martin broke the scoring drought for the Eagles sinking her first three of the day with 7:06 on the clock followed by a 4-2 run from the Spartans. Emory was scoreless again until the 2:43 minute mark with Loucopoulos and Kennedy landing back-to-back layups but CWRU continued their momentum taking a 34-25 advantage into the locker room.

Out of the break, the Eagles went on a 12-3 run with three pointers from Loucopoulos and senior Daniella Aronsky to tie the matchup at 37 apiece with 6:41 on the clock. The next three minutes saw two more ties with a layup from the Spartans tying the matchup at 41 apiece with just over three minutes left in the quarter. Emory finished the third quarter on an 8-4 run to hold their first lead at the end of a quarter.

Emory dominated the fourth quarter outscoring CWRU 24-13 in the final quarter. The Eagles' offense and defense were both on show holding the Spartans scoreless through the first five minutes of the quarter while going on an 8-0 run. Emory went on a small scoring drought of their own around the four minute mark but a three pointer from Loucopoulos at the 2:22 minute mark gave the Eagles one of their biggest leads of the game. Emory clinched the win with a 5-2 run in the last two minutes of the game with a three pointer from Mullinax to seal the deal.

The Eagles will return to Atlanta on Friday, February 14 to face the No. 1 ranked NYU Violets at 7:30 PM before taking on Brandeis on Sunday, February 16 at 12:00 PM.
