The Emory women's basketball team (13-8, 5-5 UAA) played host to the No. 1 ranked NYU Violets (21-0, 10-0 UAA) on Friday evening. While Emory held the Violets to their second lowest point total of the season, the Violets managed to pull out a 67-40 win to secure their 52
nd consecutive victory dating back to last season.
Sophomore
Alexandra Loucopoulos continued to stay hot, despite the loss, scoring 16 points on seven-of-15 shooting. Junior
Chloe Kreusser was the other Eagle to eclipse double digits, scoring 11 points while grabbing four rebounds. Senior
Erin Martin led the team in rebounds with eight.
The Violets boast one of the top defenses in the country, holding opponents to just 49.3 points per game with opponents shooting just 32.1%. Friday evening was no exception, as the Violets held Emory to just 30.4% shooting for the field, including 0-for-11 from beyond the arc. 32 of Emory's 40 points came inside the paint.
Yet, it wasn't a perfect game by any means for the Violets either. NYU shot 44.4% from the field and just 30% from three. This is just the second time all season that the Violets scored less than 70 points, with Babson holding them to 65 points back in early November.
NYU jumped out to an early 10-0 lead before Loucopoulos snapped the drought at the six-minute mark with a layup. Emory went on a run of their own, bringing the score within two after scoring six consecutive points after Loucopoulos' layup. NYU took a 13-8 lead into the second quarter.
NYU started to find its rhythm in the second quarter, shooting over 50% from the field, with Emory mustering a mark of just 33.3%. NYU went on a 12-6 run to start the half and did not look back. NYU finished the half with a 32-18 lead.
It was much of the same in the second half, NYU continuing to chip away at the Eagles on both ends of the court. Loucopoulos did continue to keep the Eagles in the game, though, scoring a quick five points to open the half. Yet, it wasn't enough as the Violets saw their most successful quarter of the contest as they scored 22 points out of the break.
The Violets coasted to a win in the final 10 minutes, securing their 52
nd straight win. The Eagles fall to 13-8 with the loss and 5-5 in conference play. The Eagles are tied for third with WashU, looking up at Carnegie Mellon at 7-3 and NYU at 10-0 with four games to go.
The Eagles will be back on Sunday when they take on the Brandeis Judges at 2:00 PM. The game will be played at the Woodruff P.E. Center in Atlanta, GA.
