The Emory University women's basketball program dropped a close overtime matchup with Carnegie Mellon on Friday night, 78-66, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Eagles fall to 12-7 on the season and hold a 4-4 record in conference play with the receiving votes Tartans take a 5-3 record in the UAA. The Eagles were led offensively by senior
Daniella Aronsky who posted 15 points and six assists followed by 13 points from sophomore
Mary Mullinax. Mullinax also paced the team with eight rebounds followed by seven from junior
Chloe Kreusser. Sophomore
Alexandra Loucopoulos also posted double-digit points in the matchup posting 12 while shooting 5-14 from the field.
After the Tartans took their first lead of the game at 4-3, Loucopoulos and Kreusser helped the Eagles score eight points, six from Loucopoulos, to pull away with an early 11-4 lead. It was all Emory offense from there with Loucopoulos and Aronsky scoring 10 more points for the Eagles in the next three minutes helping the Eagles to their biggest lead of the night. Mullinax ended the first quarter scoring with a jumper for a 28-14 advantage after one.
Senior
Erin Martin opened the scoring for the Eagles in the second quarter sinking five points for a 19-point, 33-14 lead with 8:43 on the clock. Emory was held scoreless for the next three minutes but kept the Tartans to just two points to keep either significant lead with just over five minutes remaining in the half. CMU's offense dominated the final few minutes of the half going on an 8-0 run in the last three minutes taking a 43-35 line into the locker room at halftime.
Returning to the court in the third quarter, both defenses were on show with the Tartans just being able to outscore Emory, 12-9. Kreusser and Loucopoulos were both able to score in the first few minutes of the second half answered by four points from CMU's offense with 6:06 on the clock. Emory was once again scoreless until the 2:47 mark with Malik landing a late three to hold onto a 52-47 lead at the buzzer.
The Tartans offense jumped early in the fourth reclaiming the lead on a layup with 6:47 on the clock. Following a 56-55 lead from CMU, Aronsky sank her fourth three-pointer of the day for a 58-56 Emory advantage before a jumper from the Tartans tied the matchup at 58 apiece. The final two and a half minutes of the game saw to more ties before CMU posted a turnover with three seconds on the clock. Following a timeout from Emory, the Eagles took possession but were unable to land the layup in time forcing the matchup into overtime.
CMU started the overtime period with a layup followed by a layup from Martin forcing another tie in the matchup. The Tartans finished the period with an 13-1 run to clinch the matchup 78-66.
The Eagles will travel to Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday, February 9 to face the Case Western Reserve Spartans at 12:00 PM EST.
