The No. 11 ranked Emory University men's basketball team won its third straight game Friday night, taking down Carnegie Mellon University, 97-72, inside the Highmark Center in Pittsburgh.
Senior Logan Shanahan stuffed the stat sheet with an impressive 22-point, 15-rebound double-double as he was one of five Eagles to score in double figures in the 25-point victory. Junior Ben Pearce knocked down a team-high three triples to finish with 17 points and doled out seven dimes. Junior Jair Knight chipped in with 14 points while sophomores AJ Harris and Spencer Hall finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Shanahan and Harris established a 7-2 lead for the Eagles in the opening stages before the Tartans answered with their own 9-2 run to seize an 11-9 advantage. The teams played close for the next several minutes and saw Carnegie Mellon lead 19-15.
A dominating stretch of basketball began for the Eagles as Shanahan drilled a long-range shot at the 10:48 mark of the first half, making the score 19-18 CMU. Shanahan followed with a dunk at 10:20 to put Emory back in front at 20-19. Trailing 22-20 with 8:50 remaining in the half, the Eagles closed the frame with a 26-8 run and led by as many as 17 points in the first stanza.
Emory's lead swelled to 20 points as the second half got underway when senior Albert Fallas sank a triple at 17:13 to make the score 54-34. From there, the Tartans began to regain some momentum as they whittled the margin to as low as 11 points with 11:31 left to play.
Senior Cale Martens converted a bucket at the 11:15 mark, jumpstarting an 8-0 Emory run across the next 4:34 minutes of action to give the Eagles a 73-54 lead with 6:41 to go. Emory continued to mount pressure and increased its lead to as large as 26 with 4:40 left on the clock before settling on the 25-point final margin.
The Eagles will round out its weekend road trip on Sunday taking on Case Western Reserve. Tip off from Cleveland is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
