The No. 11 ranked Emory University men's basketball team earned another blowout victory on the road as the Eagles blasted Case Western Reserve University, 93-54, Sunday afternoon at the Veale Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
With the win, Emory keeps pace with New York University in the University Athletic Association championship race as the Eagles improve to 7-2 inside UAA play and 17-3 overall. The Violets defeated WashU on Sunday to remain one game ahead of Emory in the standings at 8-1 in UAA play and 19-1 overall. The Eagles and NYU are set to square off Friday night at the WoodPEC. For the Spartans, they now slip to 6-14 on the season and 2-7 in conference action. Sunday's 39-point margin of victory marked the largest for either team in the all-time series spanning 64 games.
For the second straight game, the Eagles saw five players reach double figures with junior
Jair Knight leading the way with 18 points as he put on a show in front of a large friends and family contingent who made the trip from nearby Elyria. Sophomore
AJ Harris posted 16 points and five rebounds while shooting 6-for-9 from the floor and senior
Logan Shanahan rounded out his stellar weekend with 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Junior
Ben Pearce added 12 points to go along with a career-high seven steals and five assists and freshman
Mario Awasum netted double figures for the first time in his career with a season-high 11 points off the bench. Pearce's seven thefts tied for the second-most by an Eagle in a single-game in program history and the most since Whit Rapp recorded seven steals against Covenant in November of 2016.
The first half was a game of runs early on as both teams traded scoring bursts. Trailing 3-2, the Eagles ripped off a 14-3 run to lead 16-6 at the 14:32 mark prior to CWRU getting back in the game by scoring nine straight over the next two minutes of action. The Spartans' run was then followed by seven straight points by the Eagles as Pearce, junior
John Coppolino IV and senior
Cale Martens helped give Emory a 23-15 advantage with 10:32 to go before halftime.
CWRU's Sam Trunley halted the Emory run with a jumper at 9:32 and that was last converted field goal the Spartans would see for almost nine minutes of play as the Eagles went on a demoralizing stretch of hoops, scoring 21 straight points and holding Case Western Reserve without a point until the drought was ended with 39 seconds left to play in the half. Emory outscored CWRU 28-4 across the final 12:45 minutes of the opening period and led by as many 27 before taking a 44-19 lead into the locker room.
Knight and senior
Albert Fallas led off the second half scoring as they made it a 30-point game with the first two successful makes for the Eagles in the return to the court. Emory maintained its sizeable cushion for the remainder of play, leading by as many as 42 at 88-46 with 4:06 remaining when Awasum sank a triple and never saw the lead dip below 28 points in the second half.
The Eagles turn their attention to Friday night's showdown with the No. 3 ranked Violets with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 PM in Atlanta.
